Product Description

From Amazon

"Happiness and freedom begin with a clear understanding of one principle: Some things are within our control, and some things are not. It is only after you have faced up to this fundamental rule and learned to distinguish between what you can and can't control that inner tranquility and outer effectiveness become possible." The Stoic philosopher Epictetus was born on the eastern edges of the Roman Empire in A.D. 55, but The Art of Living is still perfectly suited for any contemporary self-help or recovery program. To prove the point, this modern interpretation by Sharon Lebell casts the teachings in up-to-date language, with phrases like "power broker" and "casual sex" popping up intermittently. But the core is still the same: Epictetus keeps the focus on progress over perfection, on accomplishing what can be accomplished and abandoning unproductive worry over what cannot.

Review

“A treasury of eternally good advice, wise as a grandfather, earthy as the Tao.” (Jack Kornfield, author of A Path with Heart )

“The message of Epictetus is as vital today as it ever was.” (Jacob Needleman, author of The Heart of Philosophy )

“Epictetus sounds like the Buddha, and Sharon Lebell’s voice makes him sound like the delightful man next door.” (Sylvia Boorstein, author of It's Easier Than You Think )

4.0 out of 5 stars It introduced me to Epictetus, Jun 21 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Art Of Living (Hardcover)
I liked this book but the criticisms by the other reviewers about the loose translation are well taken. After reading the reviews I was curious and searched for another translation to see for myself. I am currently reading the translation by Thomas Wentworth Higginson, and I find it easy to read and it seems to be a more thorough rendering of the thoughts of Epictetus which makes his philosophy better understood in my opinion.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good entry for the beginner, Sep 2 2010
I purchased this book a few years ago when I was just beginning to ask questions about my life and its direction.
I understand in retrospect how simplistic this book was but it was none the less an eye opener for me at the time.
It encouraged me too seek out other writers who addressed similar questions and led me through a number of authors like AC Grayling, William B Irvine among others
In the end it finally led me to the ideas of Plato, Aristole,Kant,Hume,Mills Rawls,MacIntyre etc
Everthing starts somewhere and this is a good a place as any.

5.0 out of 5 stars My gift to graduates, May 14 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: The Art Of Living (Hardcover)
This book makes a wonderful gift for a new graduate. How many high schools teach philosophy these days? The sensible advice and direction that this modern interpretation provides can be an excellent introduction to philosophy and perhaps widen the scope of thought for young people beyond what 'popular entertainment' offers. I've given this book for several years now and although a graduate may not initially appreciate the ideas presented, eventually it gets picked up and enjoyed.
