Product Description

From Amazon.com

This intense thriller is a work of fiction with a factual basis. Aidan Quinn stars as Annibal Ramirez, an American naval officer with a striking resemblance to real-life international terrorist Carlos "the Jackal" Sanchez, the scourge of innocent people all over the world in the 1970s and '80s. Mistaken for Sanchez by the Israeli Mossad, Ramirez is arrested but subsequently recruited by the Mossad and the CIA to pose as Sanchez and set him up as a traitor to his underwriters. Ramirez leaves his family, receives training in all aspects of Sanchez's life, and is pulled into the netherworld of terrorism and espionage. Director Christian Duguay (Screamers) wisely emphasizes character growth over obligatory action, drawing compelling portraits of an American intelligence official (Donald Sutherland) preoccupied with Sanchez, his Israeli counterpart (Ben Kingsley), and Ramirez himself, a man whose identity has merged with a monster's. --Tom Keogh

This review is from: The Assignment (DVD)
How can a movie starring Donald Sutherland and Ben Kingsley be bad? I wish this was a rhetorical question. Portions of this movie have a professional feel, and some of the acting, typically in the minor roles, is good. However, the preposterous plot, the clichéd script, the bad B movie caricatures that pass for characters, and the painfully unbelievable performances of those two actors, especially Sutherland, make for a dismal viewing experience. As another reviewer has noted, the movie reeks of low budget. Nowhere is this more evident than the training sequences which employ what look like white-clad storm troopers straight out of Star Wars.

If you're from Montreal, you'll enjoy seeing it stand in for both Vienna and itself. Look out for Notre-Dame Cathedral, the University of Montreal and, I think, the castle-like building on the reservoir at the top of Peel.

A US Naval officer (Aidan Quinn) with a striking resemblance to an international terrorist (Quinn again) is recruited to impersonate him in a complex plot to discredit him before his KGB superiors. This is a very interesting film that has more to offer than just action. Some of the most fascinating sequences come early in the film as CIA agent Jack Fields (Donald Sutherland) and Mossad agent Amos (Ben Kingsley) supervise the training that is supposed to enable him to behave convincingly in his new role--training that really seems more like brain-washing. This is clearly not a big-budget film, but it makes the best of what it has. It is not predictable by any means--the final shot will leave you guessing.

So OK it's been quite a few years since this movie has been released .... but what a pleasant and intriguing surprise ... The fact that there is speculation that it is based on fact makes the movie abou the capture of the Jakal even more interesting ...

A Quinn, D Southerland and Ben Kingsley ... I mean talk about a stellar cast that DO NOT try to scene steal from each other but rather provide us with believeable and exciting characters ....

You better get the beer and popcorn ready before the movie starts since you will not want to turn off the set until you see the final surprise minutes .....
