A bit of erotic fluff.,
By Chriss "avid reader" (Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Assignment (Paperback)
This book isn't really bad, but if you're looking for much beyond straight-up erotica (as I was; I like a little more substance with my romance) then you'll most likely be disappointed. The characters aren't very complex or developed, though there is some effort made. The (contrived) plot is really only there to move them from sex scene to sex scene. The whole thing adds up to not much more than fantasy fulfillment for the author's kinks. There are also some issues of consent that bothered me quite a bit. All in all, good for a quick little fantasy, but too simple and unrealistic for any deeper enjoyment.

Good EveningThroughout my life I have read, mostly hetero romances, written by women. I'm a romantic at heart who likes a well written story, something that brings tears and laughs throughout the book. In the last eight years, I have discover numerous websites that post gay stories. True, some of them, well a whole bunch are badly written, but there are quite a few that are extremely good! In the last three months, I have taken to purchasing, what is suppose to be gay romance on the Amazon site (this, no way blames Amazon). Twelve books in total, eleven of them written by men, all with warnings of explicit sex in them. Welllll,, I can't help but wonder why those eleven books were ever publish? Stories were bland, dull and boring, and we won't mention the sex scenes. Now, the twelve book, The Assignement, written by Evangeline Anderson, a woman! I hate to say it guys, I mean the other authors, which I won't mention here, but do read Mrs. Anderson's book and you will know who you are? You would do well to contact this lady and take pointers from her on how to write sex scenes, between two men! She didn't make her people sound as if they were doing it without really any interest, like maybe watching a boring TV program! I might conclude that the other authors had no imagination or? Reading the remainder of their books, though, I must conclude that, in my opinion, for whatever it is worth, they are missing the writing skill to put forward the thoughts and sentiments of their personnages so that the reader can somewhat identify with them! And I hope, no one thinks that I couldn't possibly identify with a well written gay book. I'm gay and do know what gay life is all about, let say from the year 1960 to 2010. Now as to the remainder of Mrs Anderson's story-line. I didn't think it was the best I've ever read, but she manage to let me feel for the guys. Her book wasn't as bland as the cold gruel I had had to swallow from the other authors! Thank you Mrs. Anderson for making one of the twelve volumes I purchase at least interesting enough for me to maybe buy some more Gay Romance, maybe? I'm certainly not gonna stop reading from gay websites though. Ghislain Desjardins

This review is from: The Assignment (Paperback)
Set in the early 1980's (which kept me visualizing Starsky and Hutch and hoping for descriptions of Magnum-esque moustaches) THE ASSIGNMENT is a su-weet read. Just long enough at 161 pages and certainly steamy enough, I can see myself returning to this story again and again. Full of suspense, random humour, genuine emotion and sexual tension so palpable it just about killed me, Valenti and O'Brian are a couple so deliciously hot and manly that you simply won`t be able to get enough of them. Plus with cover art this good on a M/M romance how can you go wrong?Detectives Nicholas Valenti and Sean O'Brian have been best friends and partners for 6 years. Often teased because of their open affection, they've got each others backs on or off duty. Through danger, donuts and divorce there isn't anything one of them wouldn't do for the other including taking a bullet or giving the occasional back massage. That's a good thing too because Captain Harris's latest case is going to test the boundaries of even their tight relationship. Nick and Sean's assignment sees them going undercover at the infamous gay resort, Ramjack. Potentially they will be busting the notorious drug dealer who's been flooding the cities gay bars with bad cocaine. It's a plum job that's going to look real good on their resumes, just as long as these hetro boys can convince everyone at the RamJack they're really a gay couple that is. But just how far are these partners willing to go? Once engaged in their roles as the "sugar daddy" and his "boy toy" the sexual heat literally jumps off the pages. Forced to `fake' their affections in public Valenti and O'Brian's discovery of each other though soft caresses and first kisses is beautifully done. And because Sean and Nick don't start out as gay characters watching their miscommunications, emerging feelings and unfamiliar foreplay is interesting and exciting. Because of the way most men are, when the gentle embraces carry over into their private suite they don't talk about their feelings or what's happening between them, they just continue to misinterpret each other and wonder...The sex scenes here are erotic, tender and very satisfying and yes they go all the way. Eventually Valenti and O'Brian are left to deal with strong emotions neither anticipated having and a very straight world to go back to. My only real disappointment with this book would be the abrupt resolution to their big case, however because I was still shaking from the eye-popping previous events that little non-event just didn't matter. A bonus 26 page short story called I'LL BE HOT FOR CHRISTMAS has also been included here. This takes place a year after the RamJack case and involves Valenti suddenly pulling away and distancing himself from an increasingly sexually frustrated and pissed off O'Brian. Could it have anything to do with his new and much younger partner? Sean becomes determined to find out what's going on even if that involves kidnapping. "Now I'm gunna kiss you babe" O'Brian breathed in his ear. "Captain Harris told us to go undercover---not under the covers."
