5.0 out of 5 stars Avalanche Handbook 2006 ed. Oct 23 2010
Format:Paperback
The definitive textbook on the science and art of understanding avalanches. A must read for anyone contemplating tours in avalanche terrain, and a textbook for serious courses regarding this subject.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not so practical Jun 30 2008
Format:Paperback
I bought this book because (a) I want to know how to assess and manage avalanche risks when I'm in the mountains, (b) and it's referenced in Mountaineering: Freedom of the Hills. Without doubt this book is the definitive reference on avalanche theory, and if you are studying for your Masters degree I'm sure it's the perfect handbook. However, if you just want practical information then the material is painfully dry. I normally devour technical books (I've read Freedom so many times the pages are falling out) but I just can't get past the first few chapters of this one. I'm on the lookout for a better guidebook...

5.0 out of 5 stars A thorough introduction to avalanche theory. Nov 21 1998
Format:Paperback
For backcountry enthusiasts with a science background, this book provides a thorough introduction to avalanche theory. The book is divided into chapters which build a solid foundation (weather systems, snow structure) through snowpack basics (snow strength and deformation, snowpack structure) and well into more advanced concepts (snowpack analysis, avalanche prediction, search and rescue, and even control with explosives, etc.) It is an excellent, if heavy, read and I found it a valuable resource in the development of an intro avalanche course.
