Book Description

Jan. 8 2013

The million-copy bestseller by “the man who remade motherhood” (Time) has now been revised, expanded, and brought thoroughly up-to-date—with the latest information on everything from diapering to day care, from midwifery to hospital birthing rooms, from postpartum nutrition to infant development.

The Searses draw from their vast experience both as medical professionals and as parents to provide comprehensive information on virtually every aspect of infant care. The Baby Book focuses on the essential needs of babies—eating, sleeping, development, health, and comfort—as it addresses the questions of greatest concern to today’s parents. The topics covered include:

• preparing for a safe and healthy birth
• bonding with your baby
• feeding your baby right
• soothing your fussy baby
• getting your baby to sleep
• understanding your baby’s development
• treating common illnesses
• babyproofing your home
• understanding toddler behavior
• dealing with temper tantrums
• toilet training
• working and parenting
• first-aid procedures
• and much more

Unrivaled in its scope and authority, The Baby Book presents a practical, contemporary approach to parenting that reflects the way we live today. The Searses acknowledge that there is no one way to parent a baby, and they offer the basic guidance and inspiration you need to develop the parenting style that best suits you and your child. Their book is a rich and invaluable resource that will help you get the most out of parenting—for your child, for yourself, and for your entire family.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lots of Good Insight for Partners April 5 2013
By SL
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book was exactly what I was expecting from other reviews. I believe in a natural style of parenting but am by no means the granola-crunching hippie type. It was refreshing to read a book that had similar values to mine but has educated medical professionals backing it up. While I won't be following everything to the letter, this book gives out the message to find your own parenting style; whatever works for you.
What I do like most is how the partner and their role/feelings are just as much a part of the book as mother and baby. I think, too often the father or partner is left on the sidelines when they deserve acknowledgement. We are living in a modern society where fathers/partners want to be as involved as the mother and are looking for resources. This book gives a lot of respect and credit to the partner role, addressing that it is crucial to the baby's well being, and the mother also needs to have time for self care.
I'll give it six thumbs up, from myself, my husband, and my baby.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very useful Feb. 19 2014
By Milonga
Format:Paperback
This is a book on attachment parenting. It has a lot of great ideas and some stuff I don't totally agree with. But, as with everything, take want you want and leave what isn't for you. What I find very, very useful about this book is the detailed explanations about the first moments after birth, the first weeks at home, breastfeeding, and everything that you can see in your baby (from rashes to colds, umbilical cord and circumcision area care, etc.) I haven't read yet after the baby's first six months, but there is information on introducing solid foods, dealing with pets, parenting special needs children. In conclusion, it is very comprehensive book with interesting ideas and really helpful information. I recommend it...a lot!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the First Time Mom & Dad Oct. 8 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
My husband and I are so thankful for a book that doesn't tell you what to do, but encourages you to use your own intuition with your own baby, as there is no perfect way to parent! I highly recommend this book to all parents who want to get to know "attachment parenting".
