Communicate with babies -- even before they can speak.

Before a baby can talk and before a toddler can say completely understandable words, they have important things to say. Babies and children are often more interested in connecting with parents or other caregivers than playing with their toys.

The Baby Signing Book uses American Sign Language, which is ideal for babies and toddlers because:

  • The ability of babies to understand what they see develops well before their ability to understand what they hear.
  • The ability of a baby to speak develops between the ages of 12 and 18 months, while the ability to use American Sign Language develops between 6 and 12 months.
  • Babies understand what they see much earlier than typically expected, and are able to sign well before they are able to talk.

The Baby Signing Book teaches parents 300 developmentally appropriate American Sign Language signs. With clear instructions for every sign, memory aid, song and game, the learning in this program is easy to follow and, most important, fun for all. Language milestones are charted throughout the book so progress can be charted. The book also features a variety of visual highlights that emphasize key concepts and interesting tips.

Adults can customize a program according to the family's needs and aspirations. With the dictionary of 300 symbols, this handbook is clearly the most user-friendly and comprehensive baby signing book available.

5.0 out of 5 stars AWESOME resource for all! Nov 1 2007
Format:Paperback
We started signing with our 7 month old. But, this is by far the best book I have found yet to continue teaching our now 14 month-old ASL signs!! I only wish this book had come out sooner!!! He's just so fast with learning new signs I have a hard time keeping up with him - 16 new signs last month alone (once he mastered 4 in 1 day)!! Up till now I had been relying on the internet for the signs (but sometimes the signs were unclear), as well as Joseph Garcia's 'Sign With Your Baby' book & DVD (it's excellent, too, but there's not enough signs in it for us!). We needed more signs, more readily available! Amazon's product page states "the most user-friendly and comprehensive baby signing book available" - I definately agree!!
This book is very specific in showing you a clear black and white pic of a child doing each sign, then goes into detail to the side of each pic of exact hand shape, body space (sign produced in), movement (of body/hand/arm) and a memory aid (to help you visualize what the sign is mimicking so you can remember the signs). There's also space provided to record the date you introduced the sign and the date your child produced the sign.
It is organized into age-appropriate sections for parents - starting out signing to your infant (0-6 months), hints on when to start things such as 2-word phrases in ASL, to expanding as your child gets older - grouped into 6 month intervals all the way up to 3 yrs! Also includes tips on how to continue through life in ASL!
The last part of the book is songs to sing & sign with! There are 36 songs - each with well-known tunes! I had been singing some of these, but I will be signing along with them now!!
It's just amazing for us to watch our 3-spoken-word toddler produce signs that we can understand! It definately helps with easing frustrations! I can hardly wait to digest this excellent book!
This is not your typical ASL dictionary with excessive unusable signs for an infant/toddler - this includes ALL the signs you're looking for to communicate with them! Animals, foods, verbs (eat, jump, etc), tons of nouns (boat, book, pillow, sand) - 300+ words in total!! We plan on taking this book everywhere with us! That way when the opportunity arises to show a new sign - we'll be ready!!
You will not be disappointed with this excellent resource!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Baby Sign July 8 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
As a Speech-Language Pathologist and a new signing instructor, I found this book to be a wonderful combination of important and accurate information about language development and strategies to assist your child in developing language and incorporating the use of sign into those strategies.

This book is a clear, straight-forward and concise book about moving your child forward in language and communication. It is very user-friendly, easy to digest, and easy to follow the suggestions. The sign language dictionary is also clear and easy to follow from the first day that you use it.

Sara Bingham is a talented professional who has captured the most important milestones and critical information about language and communication development in little ones and allowed both professionals and parents to see inside the minds of our little treasures. Even though I have studied these areas for many years, I found it elucidating and helpful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Way better than baby signs! Jan 18 2012
By Allya
Format:Paperback
Learning to communicate with my infant through signs is fascinating to me, and this book is a wonderful help! I appreciate that the signs are ASL, meaning that the infants are actually learning a language, as opposed to baby signs, which mean nothing at all.

I especially like the "dictionary" at the back, which has a great list of words to sign with infants. There are a few signs that seem a little complicated, but most are simple to sign and remember.

The songs suggested to use signs with are good too, although one could do that themselves. It's a good start!

Would have been better to be used like a dictionary and separated by levels to which the baby is able to sign back.
