From Kirkus Reviews

James Stewart in It's a Wonderful Cat, though in a vaguely realistic vein that avoids heavy sentimentality. This debut by a food and wine writer from Philadelphia who has worked as a chef, bartender, merchant seaman, and college professor follows the nameless narrator when, one cold day, he finds a newborn kitten shivering on his doorstep and takes it in. Gradually he learns to appeal to the cat by various ruses, so that the pet- in-training soon responds duly to its name (Spike) and sidles up to its new owner's leg. As a none-too-successful painter, the narrator has the requisite sexy girlfriend whom he can't quite hang on to and who leaves him time and again, only to return when she loses interest in whatever guy has replaced him. Then he meets a weight- challenged girl who, despite chubby arms, has a certain attractiveness--but clearly is not the kind of sexy beauty who can keep on winding him around her little finger. Even so, he exercises his outstanding cooking smarts and explains to her how he ``trained'' Spike largely by allowing the cat to train.... No tears, only mild uplift, and just the right size for Bridges of Madison County folks. -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Book Description

A charming, emotional fable, rife with life's important lessons, The Bachelor's Cat is a love story, not a cat story. When a somewhat introverted and self-serving bachelor artist finds a stray kitten at his doorstep, he decides to take her in to see if he can, indeed, sustain a lasting and loving relationship with another creature.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kit Lit, July 16 2004

(REAL NAME)
I loved the book. The last chapter almost pulled the same manipulative ending as Breath, Eyes, Memory and Friendship Cake but thankfully didn't. Given the photograph on the back of the book, I have to wonder if the author was writing in part about himself. It was nice to see the Bachelor evolve as a character as the kitten brought out the best in him. Anyone who liked this book would also like Clevland Amory's books and James Herriot's Cat Stories. With so many of these sentimental books about men and their cats, do they count as a genre-"kit lit" perhaps?

5.0 out of 5 stars WELL DONE - I ENJOYED EVERY WORD, Oct 31 2002

A wonderfully done little book. It will take you about an hour our so to read and I must say, it is an hour well spent! I am a sucker for syntax and Mr Hoffman's is a joy to mull. The story is an honest story, warts and all as to the characters involved.
I do hope we get more from Mr Hoffman - thank you for writing this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful read. Too close to home for comfort. I love it!, Aug 17 1999

Fortunately or unfortunately this story mirrored my own all too well. The love that develops with trust, the clarity that is found in honesty with and to oneself. The simple beauty and kindnesses found between the covers of this book have in a single day worked to scrape away layers of doubt and to shed rays of light where there was a darkness. I told you, this was too close to home for comfort. Like so many things that I've discovered or uncovered recently, I found The Bachelor's Cat to be "exactly what I needed, when I needed it". "The shared experiance heals both." For this I thank Mr. Hoffman as well as for the warm story itself. I'm sure Mr. Hoffman will be glad to hear that I too, can no longer cast pearls before swine. And yes, my cat received some extra food and strokes tonight. Guess he approves as well.
