Balloons! They are the favourite playthings of Princess Leora. When her father, the king, goes to a neighbouring kingdom to participate in a tournament, he tells Leora to signal him with balloons if anything goes wrong. But the archduke, planning to take over the kingdom, promptly locks the princess in her room and orders all the balloons in the kingdom to be popped.

With the help of a wizard and a boy with the only balloon left in the kingdom, Leora is able to plant a balloon tree that blossoms into thousands of balloons. But will it be in time to save the kingdom?

Princess Leora loves balloons. But when her father, the King, goes to visit a neighbouring kingdom, leaving the grumpy Archduke in charge, poor Princess Leora is locked away in a high tower and all the beautiful balloons in the kingdom are destroyed. Feisty Leora isn't going to let the nasty Archduke get the better of her, though. With the help of her good friend the Wizard, she discovers a magic spell that not only will help Leora get word to her father that she needs to be rescued but will once again fill the kingdom with balloons. All she has to do is plant one balloon underneath the tree in the courtyard and recite a special magic spell. But where is Leora going to be able to find a balloon? Since its publication in 1994 Phoebe Gilman's very first picture book has become a Canadian classic. The lively and imaginative story draws on classic fairy tale traditions, with rich and exquisitely detailed illustrations. Together, Gilman's story and pictures create an unforgettable book, one sure to weave a spell on young readers. 5.0 out of 5 stars cute Aug. 10 2008
By elfdart TOP 1000 REVIEWER
this story is about a princess who loves balloons and uses them to rid the kingdom of evil, with the help of some friends. it's a cute story with a simple but effective message. i love phoebe gliman, she writes amazing children's books that, though they are nothing complex, are truly epic. one of those stories you'll remember when you're older. this one isn't my favourite by her, i prefer something from nothing, or jillian jiggs, but this one is great as well... exactly what i would expect from her. i recommend this author.

A classic story. Loved this book as a child and even as a adult in her 30's! I read this story to my own child. We love looking at the pictures and trying to count all the balloons! Beautiful colours.
