Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

"Who knows why the Beatles happened?" John Lennon asked in 1980: if anyone did, it would be the Fab Four themselves, who tell their own storyDwith plenty of visual aidsDin this giant compendium. Festooned with more than 1,300 photographs, posters and documents (many in color), the weighty (6.6 lbs.) volume offers the Beatles' "own permanent written record of events up to 1970," some of it previously published, but much of it transcribed from new or unpublished interviews. Paul, George, Ringo and Beatles-related folks (Brian Epstein, George Martin, Derek Taylor) contribute text from interviews conducted for the book and for an accompanying TV program. Words from the late John Lennon have been gathered from print, broadcast and manuscripts (each with an indicated date), then spliced together to create coherent pages and paragraphs. The book opens with the band members' separate accounts of their childhoods, then moves into a year-by-year organization that allows for great detail and many digressions. Here are what the Beatles have said, or say now, about particular sessions and gigs. Here, too, are comments and reminiscences on every topic in their careerD from marijuana to Manila to Murray the K, from Hamburg to "A Hard Day's Night" to "Hey, Jude." Most of the text appears oral-history style, in short paragraphs with rapid switches between one Beatle and another: the format makes it sound as if all the Beatles (including John) were being interviewed simultaneously. The visuals bring in cartoons, signed letters, scrawled drawings and photos. As a whole the volume is beautiful, big and a bit intimidating, somewhere between the Yellow Submarine and the Death Star. (One-day laydown, Oct. 5) Forecast: Do people still care? You bet they do. With massive publicity, innumerable tie-ins and enduring, worldwide passion for the music, this is poised to be one of the biggest nonfiction books of the year. Yeah, yeah, yeah!

From Booklist

What should be the final word on the Beatles has arrived. It takes the form of a massive oral-history tome, its contents derived mostly from recorded conversations with Paul, George, and Ringo for the recent TV documentary The Beatles Anthology. Those are augmented by excerpts from interviews with John that are integrated effectively and almost seamlessly with the new material, and by occasional comments from the group's closest associates, such as recording producer George Martin. Big as it is, the volume virtually overflows with fascinating tidbits about growing up in Liverpool, early gigs, the rise to unprecedented fame and acclaim, and the Beatles' pervasive social influence. It seems crammed much in the way that the Beatles crammed several lifetimes' worth of music and living into the decade of the group's existence. Although the contents are somewhat sanitized--this is, after all, essentially a group autobiography--the four address less-pleasant incidents, such as the sacking of original Beatles drummer Pete Best and the petty squabbles that led to the group's 1970 breakup. The text is accompanied by more than 1,300 photos, many letters, and other memorabilia. There isn't much news, though. After 30 years and hundreds of books, few secrets remain to be revealed. But even familiar bits of Beatle lore seem fresh when told in the band's own words. Expect heavy demand for this monumental release, especially after the holidays, from frustrated Beatlemaniacs who failed to find the pricey item under the tree. Gordon Flagg

5.0 out of 5 stars Magical mystery tour through the Beatles' career, Jun 2 2004
By
Lisa Bauer (Tucson, AZ USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Beatles Anthology (Hardcover)
This book purports to tell the Beatles's story in their own words (though augmented by memories from people close to them like Brian Epstein, producer George Martin, roadies Neil Aspinall and Mal Evans, and publicist Derek Taylor), and does the job quite well.

I would estimate that at least 80% of the information contained in this book is already old hat for die-hard Beatlemaniacs who have memorized Mark Lewisohn's "Complete Beatles Chronicle" and read every Beatle book out there. But it's not so much the substance of the information as the way in which it is told--it's great to be able read about these events from the Beatles' point of view, even as seen through the prism of the thirty to forty years that have passed. And I am grateful that George was able to participate in the whole Anthology project before his untimely death in 2001.

The modern-day comments from Paul, George, and Ringo were apparently taken from the interviews from the Beatles Anthology circa 94-95 (if you watch the entire video/DVD and compare it to the text in the book it's pretty obvious). Hard-core fans will be able to recognize where many of the other quotes came from, although they aren't sourced, unfortunately--after each such quote there's merely a superscript such as "64" or "70" showing the year it was said, with no reference to the publication or interview it was taken from. That said, the editors had an incredible job piecing this thing together; they could almost be listed as co-writers!

There's a great deal of eye-candy (photographs, memos, handwritten notes, drawings, etc.), which are fascinating to look at. Sometimes, though, the arrangement of text, typeface, and photographs on the page seems rather random and thrown together, and even can make it difficult to read (for example, page 177, which tells about George and John's first LSD trip is printed on a background of garish red with magenta and orange text that all but obliterates the actual text). But it's never dull.

Despite the fact that it may be a bit of a chore to read, since it's large and heavy (even in paperback), it is a joy to read and I heartily recommend it to all Beatle fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars WHAT BEATLES FANS HAVE PRAYED FOR! A WONDERFUL GIFT!, Oct 29 2000

This review is from: The Beatles Anthology (Hardcover)
This comprehensive book is a real treat for serious, die-hard Beatles fans. It has a myriad of previously unpublished photographs and all of the photographs in the book are first rate.

The book does a real service by covering each band member. I really enjoyed the "updates" of each surviving Beatle. The interviews of the three surviving Beatles throughout the 1990s was refreshing and certainly provided unique insights into the (I think) world's number one band. John was quoted extensively throughout the book and the inclusion of John's comments was vital to the construction of the group. Hailed as the "Chief Beatle," John, now deceased was certainly a central figure and input by and about him was vital. These updates provided the reader with a sense of each Beatle; one came away feeling that they had a relatively accurate portrayal of the input and interpersonal relationship of each member.

On a lighter note, one smiles at the adolescent hijinks of the Beatles in their pre-glory days. The "Fab 4" are portrayed as normal kids engaging in typical teenage rebellion and mischief. In reading a description of George's "sexual rite of passage," one can almost smile at the sheer adolescence of it. Ringo, the lovable basset hound eyed drummer describes of a harsh life in the rough Dingle section of Liverpool and of the crowd he ran with in his salad days. Paul appears to be "prematurely mature," and John was a natural comic. John had a WICKED sense of humor and a DELICIOUS gift for the satirical. He was a riot! This book does justice to John's work and the compositions he and Paul shared with the world.

I loved this book and I would certainly recommend it. This is a work to be treasured and taken seriously.

5.0 out of 5 stars George Harrison (1943-2001) Rest In Peace Dear Friend, Nov 30 2001
This review is from: The Beatles Anthology (Hardcover)
There are few subjects more fascinating to me, than the way the Beatles came together as childhood friends and parted not too many years later as heros, visionaries, and architects of societal change. The music they gave us will quite likely live for all of human history. Their wit and humanity gave us laughter, hope and vision for our own dreams. The stories in The Beatles Anthology are interesting on a human level, yet read like legend-in-the-making as the Beatles phenomenon takes its place in the history of the years that have passed. The photographs in the book are plentiful and outstanding...helping us to imagine the amazing musical excitement, and electrical energy pulsing through the crowds in the early club days. Beautiful and interesting photos chronicle the entire journey of the band from start to finish. We have lost a great friend and hero with the premature passing of George Harrison. Without him the Beatles could not have generated the magic, the music and the societal introspection they did. This priceless book belongs in the collection of every serious Beatles fan, and will undoubtedly fascinate and delight anyone curious about the facts, times and adventures behind the greatest pop music group of all times. Thank you George Harrison for all of the musical treasures you have left us and for a life so beautifully lived.
