Book Description

March 5 2012
Now a major motion picture starring Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy, Dev Patel, Tom Wilkinson, Judi Dench, Penelope Wilton and Celia Imrie.

When Ravi Kapoor, an over-worked London doctor, is driven beyond endurance by his obnoxious father-in-law, he asks his wife: 'Can't we just send him away somewhere? Somewhere far, far away.' His prayer seems to have been answered when his entrepreneurial cousin, Sonny, sets up a retirement home, recreating a lost corner of England in a converted guesthouse in Bangalore. Travel and set-up are inexpensive, staff willing and plentiful - and the British pensioners can enjoy the hot weather and take mango juice with their gin.
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is a brilliant comedy of manners, mixing acute observation with a deeper message about how different cultures cope in the modern world.

I found this book funny, heartwarming and touching. With the Boomer generation fast approaching their senior years. what happens to their living conditions is a concern.

Jane Fonda has a movie coming out this fall in which a group of seniors consider communal living, not only as a financial benefit but to combat loneliness. I can't speak for the show but the book is not only entertaining but thought provoking.

I just couldn't resist writing a review on the movie itself which I just saw. Being a Brit myself I could identify with the characters.....but you certainly don't have to be from the U.K. to really and truly enjoy this movie. The cast, well what can I say - the best of the best and includes Dame Judy Dench and Maggie Smith. If you are familiar with both of these actors you know they are so fabulous and have never been in a bad movie. I've got to say, Maggie Smith (who is a member of the cast of PBS's Downton Abbey) is at her very best - she doesn't even have to say a word, just a look says everything!

Without giving the story away, it's about about a group of Brits of a certain age who don't know each other and are so totally unique and from all socio-economic backgrounds. They all decide to throw caution to the wind and book a vacation in India. You seem to be literally transported there and what a joy it is to see the gorgeous colours and sounds of this land - you can practically smell the food spices. What happens there to each of the men and women is utterly enthralling and time went by so quickly, I was surprised when the movie came to an end.

Dame Judy Dench in a recent interview said she wasn't thrilled at the prospect of filming for so long in India for some reason, but she came back just raving about the experience.

Age group to see this movie? Well, it depends but I'd say men and women 40+ would get the most out of it. A total must see.

If you are looking to read an identical version of the movie you will be disappointed. However, if you wish to read a wonderful story about people, relationships and coming to terms with who you are, you will love this story. Like the movie it is a feel good book and very much worth the read. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
