Not blah, but uneven, July 3 2010

Perhaps uneven is not quite right either.
If you know only Swinging Shepherd Blues (from 1959 I believe), and expect a lot of similar style pieces, only two other numbers on this disk come close.
The fact is, this is mostly Koffman music from the 1970s, and you'll find several classical pieces, several that I would call prog rock, and even some funky numbers that would sound at home on a Herbie Mann album.
There are only 2 tracks I didn't much care for, but the sequencing of the tracks, and my guess that they came from albums that were coherent in themselves but were radically different from each other, lead me to say the cd is uneven. I would rather listen to the original albums, but until then, this cd is probably worth having.
Unfortunately, this is a 'budget' release, and doesn't even identify the albums from which the pieces come, let alone some of the musicians working with Moe Koffman. But Doug Riley's name throughout the song-writing credits confirms my feeling he was also heavily involved in playing on many of the tracks.
When I bought this in a Canadian store a few years ago, it was a budget-priced cd. Too bad it is so high-priced now!
