Product Description

From Amazon.com

Van Morrison reputedly wasn't crazy about the idea of a greatest-hits package, and this set's haphazard programming--which leaps from period to period, style to style, tossing in two key singles by his mid-'60s band Them--speaks to his lack of involvement. Still, it rivals Moondance as Morrison's most popular album, and for a reason: like that classic, it offers one deeply soulful, spiritually and musically thoughtful track after another. Much of his more "difficult" work is ignored here; in fact, Best of... gives us an intriguing picture of a Van who's almost eager to please. --Rickey Wright

Chronique amazon.fr

--Philippe Margotin

Van the Man's Best...almost Aug 19 2002
Format:Audio CD
"The Best of Van Morrison" is a great introduction to Van's entire career, beginning with his days in British Invasion group Them. The album includes their hits "Gloria," "Baby Please Don't Go," and "Here Comes The Night." Would have been great if they had included "Mystic Eyes," which does not appear on Van's second greatest hits album either. His Bang era is represented by "Brown-Eyed Girl." The version on the album is the edited version (minus "making love in the green grass"). If you want the original version, his "Bang Masters" includes it, as well as an alternate take. "The Best of Van Morrison" also includes tracks from his peak period between "Astral Weeks" and "St Dominic's Preview." Like any "Best of" album, there are tracks missing, such as "Crazy Love," "Into The Mystic," "Tupelo Honey," and "Blue Money." Furthermore, "Astral Weeks" is only represented with one track, "Sweet Thing," which is hardly indicative of the avante-gardeness of "Astral Weeks." Still, if you must own one Van Morrison album, this is the one.

This album shows you that Van is about a lot more than Brown Eyed Girl.

Excellent Intro To Van & Why To Upgrade to the New Version May 13 2002

If you don't have any Van Morrison this is an excellent starting point, however, be forewarned that you will find yourself needing to buy additional CD's of his. There are countless amazing songs - more than most people even realize he wrote.

My only problem with this CD is the sequencing. As good as all these songs are, his earlier tracks with Them just do not flow well into his more sophisticated tracks like "Moondance" or "Have I Told You Lately". This is easily remedied of course by programming (or heaven forbid!) burning a mix of your own.

When a musician makes SO much good music, of course some favorites will be missing (Tupelo Honey, Crazy Love, Astral Weeks, etc.) but you will be hard pressed to find a safer bet when it comes to buying a single CD by Van the Man.

If you love this CD as I do, and you're thinking of "upgrading" to the new remastered version, it's definitely worth the investment for a few reasons. First the sound quality is noticeably improved (and it was good to begin with!). You'll also get the album version of "Brown Eyed Girl", not that butchered single edit so many complain about. One other minor thing - the tracks are now numbered on the back of the CD case. I know this sounds minor but if you had the older version without the numbers noted, and tried programming it (as I often did), you can probably relate to this minor, but still appreciated, change.

Van is great, but the edited version of his greatest song "Brown Eyed Girl" is on this CD. Otherwise has some good tracks.
