"The Best of Van Morrison" is a great introduction to Van's entire career, beginning with his days in British Invasion group Them. The album includes their hits "Gloria," "Baby Please Don't Go," and "Here Comes The Night." Would have been great if they had included "Mystic Eyes," which does not appear on Van's second greatest hits album either. His Bang era is represented by "Brown-Eyed Girl." The version on the album is the edited version (minus "making love in the green grass"). If you want the original version, his "Bang Masters" includes it, as well as an alternate take. "The Best of Van Morrison" also includes tracks from his peak period between "Astral Weeks" and "St Dominic's Preview." Like any "Best of" album, there are tracks missing, such as "Crazy Love," "Into The Mystic," "Tupelo Honey," and "Blue Money." Furthermore, "Astral Weeks" is only represented with one track, "Sweet Thing," which is hardly indicative of the avante-gardeness of "Astral Weeks." Still, if you must own one Van Morrison album, this is the one.
