I was skeptical about any book written on IC as I am a sufferer for 7 years, have been through all the treatments available & still not healed. At times it is beyond bearable. Wendy delievers a very helpful & inspiring book filled with resources & tips for relieving & preventing flare ups - helping to heal the bladder and even dietary suggestions for bladder sensitive patients. Proving links between certain foods & stress triggers that "regular" doctors will not even touch.
Most important of all she presents a hope! A hope that there are alternative choices for dealing with the uncomfortable symptons that IC brings - this book is A MUST for any IC patient or any patient dealing with pelvic pain at all!
Thank You Wendy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Celiac Nurse Review, Dec 21 2010
By
shelly stuart (surrey, British Columbia Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Better Bladder Book: A Holistic Approach to Healing Interstitial Cystitis and Chronic Pelvic Pain (Paperback)
I am so impressed by this book. It has been written by an registered nurse (RN) who knows how to advocate for her patients and who regularly thinks outside of the box. The author, Wendy Cohen, is an RN from Portland, Oregon, (US). She counsels patients with celiac disease, dermatitis herpetiformis, non-celiac gluten intolerance, and bladder related conditions.

I know from my experience as a RN, that conventional medicine only offers the use of medication and a few procedures to help deal with urological issues. Wendy's book offers endless ideas and alternative tips to help ease the pain and inflammation associated with chronic pelvic pain and bladder problems. For example, with interstitial cystitis, she describes it as the perfect storm with several overlapping contributing factors. Wendy discusses each factor and provides tips to help heal not only the condition, but your whole body and well-being. She helps the reader to see the big picture and explores new ways of thinking about interstitial cystitis and chronic pelvic pain.

Wendy includes various therapeutic diets, nutritional supplements, medicinal herbs, and other complementary techniques that can be used to decrease the symptoms, increase urological health and overall well being. I think this part of the book helps to provide a sense of hope and control to many who are living with daily pain and empowers patients with many options.

If you are suffering and looking for answers, then this comprehensive book about the urinary system, the types of disorders that can occur and how to direct your own healing journey may provide the perfect solution. I think the information in this book really empowers patients so that they can have knowledgeable discussions with their doctors, make educated choices and direct their own recovery. I sincerely believe that every patient with urological problems would benefit from the comprehensive knowledge provided in this book.

Shelly Stuart, R.N., B.Sc.N.

5.0 out of 5 stars A qualityof life saver for sufferers of Interstitial cystitis(IC), Nov 25 2010
By W. A. Zeckhausen - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Better Bladder Book: A Holistic Approach to Healing Interstitial Cystitis and Chronic Pelvic Pain (Paperback)
As someone who suffered for 8 years, 24/7 with IC, I wish my urologist had this book as a resource to offer 10 years ago. Men get Interstitial Cystitis (IC),more often then realized, instead misdiagnosed with prostititis. When my brother got bladder cancer, only then my urologist decided to look inside my bladder. Conclusion: You don't have cancer. Your bladder is a mess, you have IC, and I don't know what to tell you to do! Learning about IC and its obvious symptoms, I asked him why he didn't consider IC when his treatment for prostititis was ineffective... his response ...because men don't usually get it! I didn't say the obvious..I'm a man, I have the symptoms, and you know that men get it, even though perhaps less often then women.

I facilitate a family physician support group...they cringe re having patients with IC, because of the patient's pain/despair, and feel guilty not knowing how to help. In the horrific history of this disease, some women used to have their bladders removed, but even that drastic mistake didn't produce recovery from the chronic pain and other symptoms. Some women after seeking help from different physicians and not getting it, when finally told by a physician that it was in their head, took their lives. There's not room to add to the experiences of IC patients in not getting help from most physicians... not because the physicians didn't care, but they just didn't understand. Described as a disease of unknown cause and unknown cure, pioneers such as Amrit Willis and others, including Wendy Cohan, who overcame their own IC, have proven it can be cured. After 8 years of daily and nightly torture with IC, I got my cure by having 3 nerve blocks, recommended to me by a woman friend, not a physician. Subsequently I mentioned to a woman friend, who is a pain doctor, about my cure. She said, that's interesting, we don't think of epidurals for IC. I said nothing, hoping she would think about it!

In this book reference is made to "Solving the IC Puzzle" by Amrit Willis having a wealth of information which is helpful for many, which it is, but this new book by Wendy Cohan is at least 10 years more up to date, clearer, and easier to read. Chances are, if you're even reading about this specialized topic, you have IC or are related by family or friends to the topic so you know how awful the disease is in destroying quality of life. If you don't know, Google it! This book is a godsend...a gift for relieving suffering and restoring quality of life. Besides reading it, and gifting the book to others suffering from IC & chronic pelvic pain, the likely most effective use for it would be to inform or gift family physicians, and especially urologists with the book. It's not a disease most people who have it wish to talk about to others. Thank you recovered IC nurse Wendy Cohan!

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally - a truly comprehensive guide!, Nov 19 2010
By Kimberly Skach - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Better Bladder Book: A Holistic Approach to Healing Interstitial Cystitis and Chronic Pelvic Pain (Paperback)
Thank you, Wendy Cohan, for doing your research - new answers are available for women and men in pain and the doctors who treat them! So much more is known now about the debilitating condition of interstitial cystitis/pelvic pain syndrome. Thousands of women are suffering, looking for answers beyond the minimal help that's been available for years through traditional medicine. Wendy Cohan covers hormones, gluten intolerance, bacterial connections that take some work to discover, adrenal connections, pelvic floor dysfunction and more. EVERY doctor and bladder pain patient in the country needs this resource - don't miss what's been discovered in just the last 5 years. The Interstitial Cystitis Association won't tell you about some of these causes...don't suffer any further when answers are becoming available.

The Better Bladder Book is not only about achieving bladder wellness, healing IC and chronic pelvic pain... it's also a guide to health and well-being in general. So often it's hard to know where to begin, and this book offers a wealth of resources to help you find a plan that's best for your healing in an easy to read and easy to understand format. The success stories are inspirational and encouraging. I found the information on herbal remedies and special diets one can consider to be especially helpful.
