The Big Empty, Feb 16 2010
This review is from: The Big Empty (DVD)
Great movie. It is a bit of a mind twist and a slow starter. But well worth viewing. If you liked Johnny Darko you'll like this.

There are actors and then there are actors, Feb 25 2007
This review is from: The Big Empty (DVD)
And the best scenes in this movie come from the largely veteran actor supporting casts -- Darryl Hannah, Bud Cort, Kelsey Grammar and Sean Bean -- who could give Clint Eastwood a run for his money.
John Favreau was okay, but seldom did his presence do anything to light up the screen or push the action forward. His body language was pretty stiff and his facial expressions were limited to three -- confused, confused and a little irritated.
In Favreau's opening scene with Bud Cort -- all eyes are on Cort because Cort ACTS!! Same with Darryl Hannah. Kelsey Grammar steals every scene John is in with his comic timing, body MOVEMENT -- (actors need to know how to keep MOVING in films)and dead on dialogue delivery.
But it is Sean Bean who brings this film to its mythic proportion. He has a field day out Clint Eastwooding Eastwood himself. The minute Mr. Bean enters the scene, the rest of the actors may as well hitch up their horses and ride out of town. Bean doesn't do this intentionally. It is simply that he has such screen presence, only another actor of his caliber (i.e. Di Nero, Pacino, etc.) could hold their own.
This movie is worth watching for Bean's performance alone.

Quirky, Existential Romp, Jun 23 2004
This review is from: The Big Empty (DVD)
If you are like me, Sean Bean is what drew you to this movie. But you'll happily stay for the script, the cinematography, and the classic ensemble of actors. This is a film that aims to be both art and entertainment and succeeds.
Without giving too much away, the plot revolves around a mysterious blue suitcase that our hero - an out-of-work actor - is hired to deliver to an even more mysterious Yorkshire-accented Cowboy (Sean Bean) around whom people seem to...disappear.
The Big Empty is quirky but not a full-on comedy. It has a strong existential vibe with a touch of Film Noir. If you watch it with a group, there will be plenty of discussion afterwards.
Although rated "R", I would guess that this film would be rated PG-13 if not for the presence of the "F" word.
The DVD has a lovely collection of extras - deleted scenes, extended scenes, interviews with the stars, and the alternate ending - which delicately skews the emphasis of the story. They really should have kept it.
This is an imaginative independent film for people who like movies that walk on the weird side. It really should have gotten better theatrical distribution. After all, how often is one given the chance to go on a quirky, existential romp through Baker, CA?
