Book Description

Nov. 1 2006
Since the publication of The Biology of Belief, Dr. Bruce Lipton has received widespread acclaim as one of the most accessible and knowledgeable voices of "new biology." The science is called epigenetics, a revolutionary field that shows us how the energy of consciousness is as important in shaping life on earth as DNA and chemistry. In this original author adaptation, Dr. Lipton brings his clarity, insight, and humor to unveiling a profound change in how we perceive the way life works, including: How environment, including our thoughts and emotions, controls the character of every cell. Quantum physics and life: the key to understanding the bigger picture of how mind over matter works. Cooperation and evolution, moving beyond the "selfish gene" theory to see that a natural trend toward harmony literally shapes the biosphere. Why the oft-dismissed placebo effect is really the most powerful healing tool we have, and much more.

Dr. Lipton explains cellular biology in a clear and easily understood text. This book should be required reading for all 1st year bio or biochem majors. Dr. Lipton successfully rebukes the dogma of the DNA in our genes as having the ultimate control over our biology and our lives. Epigenetics is definitely the new and more significant focus of cellular biology. As a practicing physician the fact that diet trumps genes, (in fact diet, exercise, lifestyle, attitude and environment trumps genes) is an absolutely liberating fact and should be for all other doctors and their patients in these times of ever increasing rates of chronic disease. Dr. Lipton's scientific foundation is solid and for anyone interested in practicing medicine according to epigenetics where genotype does not necessarily lead to chronic disease-phenotype,I suggest that they contact the Institute of Functional Medicine for their clinical course material. As for Lillian's review, hmmm, simply put, I think she missed the point.

5.0 out of 5 stars A bridge between Science and Spirit Dec 4 2005
By Seeker
Finally, a book that provides some scientific insights as to how our thoughts can affect the physical body. With Dr. Lipton's knowledge on cellular biology, it brings to light a brand new understanding of how the body operates.
In layman's terms, Dr. Lipton is able to use cellular biology and quantum physics to explain the inner workings of our cells and how our environment turns our genes 'on' and 'off'. This theory may also provide an explanation on how alternative disciplinaries such as energy work, massage and homeopathic medicine help in promoting health.
The Epilogue is especially insightful as Dr. Lipton explains the relationship between spirit and science. I have always find it difficult to understand mind-bloggling spiritual sayings such as 'we are made in the image of the Universe/God' or 'we are all ONE', as well as the true meaning of 'self'. Dr. Lipton uses lively examples and easy-to-understand wording to explain these spritual notions with a scientific touch to them.
A very intriguing book to read. There is now more evidence that we do have a say in controlling our own health physically, mentally, emotionally as well as spiritually.
A must read for alternative health practitioners!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dogma of DNA finally dissolved!!! April 18 2005
Well it's about time! For those of you who have been plagued by the dogma of DNA (genetic determinism or fatalism) will find this book beyond inspiring! We have been told by western biology that the DNA is the at the heart of who we are, with the DNA in the cell nucleus being the brain of what activates and makes the cell function and control the rest of the body's activities. From this model (actual called the 'DOGMA OF DNA' in Biology teachings) ALL life is DNA in motion and we are genetic beings with all our diseases and traits (physical & mnetal) pre-determined. This model/paradigm has become a key part of the very structured and defined mechanistic biological pharmaceutical medicine we see domniating the West today (sigh).
BUT in this book Lipton has flipped this notion upside with the profound discovery that the DNA in the nucleus is in fact is NOT the brain or determining factor of the body. Lipton deconstructs the dogma by showing the mem-BRANE of the cell is the brain that is driving and determining the cells activities which equal the rest of the body and its functions. The key here is the signals that are recieved by the cells mem-BRANE. These signals consist of input from the environment but mainly the thoguhts of the individual. He shows that when we become response-able and can pro-actively use our thoughts to cohere with the cells activities we have profound influence over their behavior. THOUGHTS INFLUENCE BIOLOGY, now who chooses your thoughts?? When one controls the signals they control the cells and this changes everything we thought we knew about cell, the human body and ultimately dis-ease.
I found this book to be an important piece of the 'beyond the BLEEP' new science information that truly shows how 'our thoughts control our reality'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pivotal Oct. 26 2009
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This is one of the two most pivotal books I have read in the past decade - and I am an avid reader. Lipton adhers to solid scientific methodology and presents his theories and conclusions in a most readable fashion. Lipton has lived his story, has transformed many lives, and presents this critical new discovery in an entertaining fashion. I look forward to a world that accepts epigenetics as an essential science and that builds on this knowledge to create an evolved healthcare system.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written, Great science! June 26 2005
Bruce Lipton does what many have failed - he explains his science in understandable, human terms. As a person who has worked with both empirical science, and intuitive understanding for many years, with great results, this explanation finally allows me to point to a book and say "Yes, that's what I meant." Thanks, Bruce, and keep up the great work.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read May 1 2012
The research and description of the cell, especially the cell membrane, and how outside influences play the major role in gene activation helped me see the topic more clearly since I had come across the idea before. The chapter on the effects of stress on the mind, body and cell activity was also exceptional and I learned new information that helps to reiterate that stress reduction is very important. I had come across the importance of stress reduction via the research and explanation of the meditation and breathing program Éiriú Eolas which I have been practicing for some time.

The author in another chapter describes how as children we are programmed with habits, beliefs and that as adults we are reactions machines just playing back these programs. I found the description spells out the state of the individual pretty well. I'm not sure if the author is aware of the teachings and work of G. I. Gurdjieff. Gurdjieff laid out this fact in a full explanation of the subject over 70 years ago. The book `In Search of the Miraculous' I think gives the best and fullest version of Gurdjieff's Fourth Way teachings and is an in depth description of man as a reaction machine, so if you find the chapter interesting you will want to continue on to Gurdjieff. It's interesting to find that science with its discovery of the adaptive unconscious, see the book `Strangers to Ourselves' for a full treatment of the subject, that is mentioned by the author is just now catching up to Gurdjieff and what I see as the best explanation for the actions and state of man as a whole.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great science but flabby philosophy
I found the detailed descriptions of how cells function fascinating, but the last two chapters on Mindful Parenting and Sprit and Science seemed weak in comparison.

Faith is sometimes seen as a fickle theory or wishful thinking. Maybe it is more scientific than we first imagined.

4.0 out of 5 stars extraordinary.
I gave it a four star as I did not understand all of the science. I did not do well in science in school. That been said Dr. Liptons claim and evidence appears as hard science. Read more

I am still reading this book. Its a slow read and, if one is not used to the scientific jargon, it is hard to follow along. However, I get the gist of it. So its OK. Read more
