Once again in top form...,

This review is from: The Black Prism (Hardcover)
My hat off to Mr. Weeks. He has done it again. I did not think he could top the Night Angel trilogy, but he masterfully weaves his magic again in a universe unlike anything we have seen before - and we do get to see a lot of tired plots and cliches in the fantasy genre. His characters are always spectacularly drawn - vivid, flawed, human and always deserving our empathy. The book kept surprising me - no one is quite what you expect them to be and there are hidden depths slowly being revealed as the book progresses. Fantastic pace, dry wit, political subtleties... the works. If there was ever one thing to reproach this book (I am trying to be picky here) the descriptions are somewhat lacklustre. In other words, if you enjoy the lush romanticism of Gavriel Kay, you will not find it here. Other than the blue prison (I don't want to give away any details) it is hard to picture how any particular place looks like. However, the deft character portrayals, the inspired magic system and the narrative provide more than ample joy to the fantasy reader. Looking forward to the next book in the series!

Good Read.,
This review is from: The Black Prism (Hardcover)
This book was an instant purchase for me (a Night Angel Trilogy fan) upon its publishing. The book starts a little slower than desired but it picks up throughout. It must also be kept in mind that this is the first book in a series and as such has to lay down allot of foundation for the rest to be built upon. That being said, the magic system of this book is highly intriguing and well thought out. It is apparent that Mr. Weeks spent a great deal of time developing a "cool" concept into a viable system with set rules and believable limitations. As a Physics Minor it is interesting to see how he incorporates theories pertaining to light in order to flesh out his magic system. The plot is fairly predictable at times but at other times you will be blindsided as certain events unfold. One of the main character know as Kip is one of the most believable characters I have encountered in a long time. He is a self criticizing/loathing kid who readily admits his faults and his share of those embarrassing moments that we all have throughout our lives. The other characters are all believable to a similar extent but Kip stands out in my mind as the most human of the lot. I would (and have) readily recommend this book to any fan of fantasy regardless of having read the Night Angel books or not.

Since I am not a man who is good with words, I will not be giving an in depth review of the novel. However, since I have enjoyed all of Brent Weeks' novels, I feel I must show my support. As with his Night Angel Trilogy, this book is very well written, and paints a world unlike anything you've ever imagined (ok, maybe its just anything I've ever imagined). I absolutely loved the characters in this novel, I love the events that transpired, and battles each character faces both externally and internally. After finishing the book, I honestly can not wait for the next two in the trilogy. I feel this book is definitely worth a try, as well as the night angel trilogy books.
