John Jakes is a fabulous writer of fictional history. This book has several short stories about the early west. If you enjoy history and want to feel apart of it, this book is a must.

John Jakes is, in my opinion, the finest historical fiction writer in the United States. This selection of short stories were, for the most part, written when Jakes was just starting out. They are primarily Western stories written for pulp magazines. This does not in any way reduce their interest or illustrate the workings of a new author who has not yet gained his full potential. The stories are written as well as his much later books. The historical nature of the stories are not as evident as in his later works, but remain highly entertaining and very worth the purchase.

John Jakes books, including this one, is filled with vivid pictures of history and conditions during our country's past. I like American history and so I like that.
If he would just leave out all the filthy words and pictures of illicit sex, I would enjoy his books a great deal more.
I have read his Kent Family Series and enjoyed it. Havn't decided if I will read more of this series for reason I have given.

John Jakes writes very good material, and has done so, again, in this compilation of western stories called 'The Bold Frontier'.
