Book Description

Jan. 15 2007 University of Manitoba Icelandic Studies (Book 1)

Iceland was the last country in Europe to become inhabited, and we know more about the beginnings and early history of Icelandic society than we do of any other in the Old World. This world was vividly recounted in The Book of Settlements, first compiled by the first Icelandic historians in the thirteenth century. It describes in detail individuals’ daily life during the Icelandic Age of Settlement.

I am currently reading all things norse/viking I can get my hands on, and saw this title refered to often in the Icelandic area of those studies. Landnamabok ("Book of Settlements") tells short tales of "who did what to whom" during the early settlement of Iceland in viking times. If these accounts are reasonably true, those "crazed norsemen" considered it a better idea to pack everything they owned into large, open row boats and sail across the uncharted Atlantic into an unknown future, rather than fight what was bothering them back in the "old" country. Ultimately, Iceland presented them with the same difficulties getting along with each other as motivated them to leave their homelands in the first place. We can run, but we cannot hide from our own human nature,,,,, };>{>
