Book Description

Oct 29 2012 The Book of Thomas
"The mind is its own place and in itself, can make a Heaven of Hell, a Hell of Heaven." -John Milton, Paradise Lost In the beginning, the Church ruled all the Spheres of the Apostles. But that was millennia ago, before the origins of this massive, artificial realm were forgotten. Now, drought, plague and war afflict the Spheres that make up the world of Man, fragmenting society into antagonistic sects that carry out ruthless pogroms. A young orphan, Thomas, is thrust into the midst of this upheaval and embarks on a journey to the highest of all Spheres, Heaven. As he struggles through his chaotic, crumbling world, Thomas witnesses cruelty and violence beyond measure-and chances upon unexpected moments of courage and self-sacrifice. In this turmoil, his belief becomes doubt as he is forced to make soul-rending choices between what his faith tells him he should do, and what he must do to survive. The Book of Thomas: Heaven is the unflinching, deeply affecting tale of the battle that reason and religion wage for a boy's soul.

This book pushed all my buttons. Crisp and clear writing, believable characters, and an astounding world full of secrets. I completely love it and can't wait to get my hands on the others.

If you like strong SF or moody gothic stories or Christian mythology, then go get it, now!

One of my wins from Goodreads/firstreads

Although this story was very well written and developed, I ended up having a hard time following the story and keeping up. It was very slow for me and just couldn't hold my attention. I just don't think it was the book for me.
5.0 out of 5 stars Good Dystopian Story Jan 5 2013

End of the world dystopian stories normally are not my thing. However, this first person story of a boy's journey through a surreal dystopian world based on Catholic mythos is so well written, I was pulled in from the first few pages. Thomas is believable and relatable as he struggles with the discord between what the adults profess and what they do.

Those who are literal Bible religious, especially Catholics, may be offended at the hypocrisy of almost every adult in this book, but this story explores a twisted world that is breaking down into chaos. Human history has many power seeking men who use religious doctrine to control others, that does not mean religion is bad; those that use it for selfish ends are.

While there isn't a full explanation of how this world works, the author must have a detailed one somewhere, because Thomas' surroundings are seamless without anything to pull me out of his narrative wondering "But how?"

My only negative is that it ends when Thomas and his companion jump to the ground kilometers below with only makeshift glider to prevent death. I hate endings like that. A better place would be the two landing on the ground, bruised but alive, then walk off scene on their journey to save their world.
