Product Description

From Amazon.com

The Brady Bunch never scored high ratings during its five year run, but this friendly family comedy has remained in reruns ever since, while bigger hits have slipped into oblivion. Pretty much everyone who grew up in the 1970s or '80s knows the show inside and out: A vision of suburban family life so utopian it's as fantastical as Neverland or Santa's workshop--and just like these imaginary realms, it casts a spell over every kid who wished all problems could be resolved with a few wise words, a good-natured shrug, or a winsome smile. The Brady Bunch: The Complete Second Season is indistinguishable from every other season, but the reassuring formula is crucial to the show's appeal. Eldest brother Greg (Barry Williams) may decide he's all grown up and wants a groovy bachelor pad, or eldest sister Marcia (Maureen McCormick) may get all riled up about women's lib and decide to join the Frontier Scouts, or super-maid Alice (Ann B. Davis, whose persona is hilariously similar to Ellen DeGeneres) may fantasize about running off with an old flame, but by the end of the show you know everything will return to a zen-like domestic harmony.

It's all pretty bizarre when you realize that both halves of the family have suffered the death of a parent! The most angst to be found is the relentless identity crisis of middle sister Jan (Eve Plumb), who tries to remove her freckles with lemon juice and buys a curly brunette wig to forge a new self-image. Nowadays Jan would be a prime candidate for bulimia, but in the Brady world such psychodrama is unthinkable. This even emotional keel could have been creepy and antiseptic, but due to the charm of the kids and the smooth yet earthy presence of Robert Reed and Florence Henderson as parents Mike and Carol Brady, The Brady Bunch just seemed nice. You wanted that to be your family. If you watched the show in your childhood, watching The Brady Bunch: The Complete Second Season as an adult will lull you into a sweet, blissful dream. --Bret Fetzer

4.0 out of 5 stars A No Frills DVD Set, Aug 9 2005
By A Customer
This review is from: The Brady Bunch: Season 2 (DVD)
After getting Season 1 on DVD I was hoping that Paramount would create a second season DVD set that would top the first. I was wrong. Instead of including more audio commentary by the former cast and crew, they've chosen to release a barebones DVD set. This is why I am subtracting 1 point from an otherwise 5/5 set.

Season 2 continues where Season 1 left off with the Brady kids becoming even more the center of the series. In Season 2 more mature themes are tackled such as smoking (Greg), self-identity (poor Jan), women's liberation, and bullying. Even though the issues may appear trite compared to the ones of teen pregnancy, drugs, and sexual orientation one finds in todays programs, they are certainly topics that are relevant even today. One example is the episode 'The Dropout' where Greg thought he would be the best baseball pitcher ever, and neglected his schoolwork. He learned the lesson the hard way that you need balance in your life, like an education, in case the sports career doesn't work out - something which is true even today.

I won't go into the details of the rest of the episodes as you can easily find them on various internet websites. I will just discuss the quality of the DVDs. The audio is a nice crisp 2.0 mono. I don't think it's possible for them to ever create a true stereo mix of these old TV shows since the master tapes have long since been lost.

The video image varies. We are getting the uncut episodes as they first aired 35 years ago, so some scenes that were edited out in syndication to make room for more commercials haven't been seen in decades. Consequently, the original film negatives probably didn't get the preservation treatment the syndicated versions received, so they look dark and grainy in contrast to the preserved sections, which are crisp with nice bright colours. The one episode on the set that seems to have suffered all the way through for some reason was 'Not-So-Ugly-Duckling'. The entire episode looks dark with muted colours and grainy. Maybe they used the wrong source material?

Overall, it's still a set worth getting. Even if you are finicky about the quality of the image on the DVDs you buy, the great stories will surely ease your troubles. And hopefully Season 3 will have value-added features that this set lacked.

5.0 out of 5 stars Baby talk, baby talk...it's a wonder you can walk, Jun 19 2005
By Robin Orlowski "political activist" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Brady Bunch: Season 2 (DVD)
A year (at least) older, the Bradys return to continue learning about life--and each other. Twenty three episodes in this season (1970-1971) actually do a good job of showing that even the 'bunch' is not perfect.

Greg searches for himself this season. First he gets an office boy job at Mike's office in "Call me Irresponsible", but quickly looses the plans for a very important project. In "Where there is smoke" Greg is caught smoking nicotine cigarettes with his friends; this episode probably has more punch with today's numerous anti-youth smoking initiatives than it did in an era when advertising restrictions were much less lax.

Finally, in "Our son, the man" Greg decides that he needs his own 'crash pad' and moves into Mike's den. He also decides that he will start calling his parents by their first names, but this is not permanent change in the Brady universe. Greg ultimately moves back in with his brothers (at least for this season) and once again uses `mom and dad'.

Cindy and Jan also come into their own as characters during this season. Cindy deals with the bully Buddy Hinton, who makes fun of her speech ("A fistful of reasons") with Peter's assistance, and Bobby feels compelled to win his own merit ("The winner") to catch up with everybody else in this family. Nothing is as ever smooth as it had initially seemed in the Brady household.

"Will the real Jan Brady please stand up" has Jan buy an admittedly cheap wig in her own latest attempt to stand out from the more 'popular' members of the Bunch. She had previously invented George Glass for similar purposes in another episode ("The not-so-ugly-duckling").

This season continues telling the way they became the Brady Bunch with just the right amounts of sugar and spice mixed together. Keep the seasons coming.

5.0 out of 5 stars A 1970'S CLASSIC!, July 13 2005
By Tim Janson - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Brady Bunch: Season 2 (DVD)
This is a show that just keeps going and going. I cannot even beleive that it's been over 30 years since this show went off the air. I loved spending my Friday evenings as a kid with the Brady's! The Brady Bunch is truly a pop culture icon in the history of TV. A fanstastic show about family values. No matter what problems came up, they were always resolved by the end of the show. And then there's the Brady house. I always loved that house with the big stairway up to the second floor, the family room with the walkout patio, the cool attic....Just a wonderful show that doesn't get old.

My favorite episodes from season two are:

"the Dropout" Greg thinks he's going to be a big league pitcher and considers dropping out of high school. Dodger pitching great Don Drysdale guest stars

"The Slumber Caper" Marcia has a slumber party and the boys are happy as it gives them the chance to scare the girls.

"A Fistful of Reasons" A bully is making fun of Cindy due to her lisp. Peter is at first afraid of the bully but then cleans his clock.

"The not so ugly Duckling" A classic as Jan is feeling envious of Marcia so she invents an imaginary boyfriend from another town named George Glass.

"Where there's smoke" Greg gets caught smoking and Marcia rats him out!

"Will the Real jan Brady Please Stand up" Another classic as jan again is feeling the middle child blues and buys a horrible looking black wig.

"The Liberation of Marcia Brady" Marcia is all for women's lib and decides to join Gregs boy scout troop to prove she can do anything a boy can do.

"Double parked" The Bradys lead a crusade to save a park but it's Mike's company that is planning to build there.

It's so hard to pick favorites as this is such a great show. Even though these are still in re-run it's great to have them on DVD!

5.0 out of 5 stars Back To Innocence, May 6 2005
By Saved Singer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Brady Bunch: Season 2 (DVD)
Anytime you watch the Brady Bunch you go back to a simpler and more innocent time. When any challenge/problem such as Peter breaking Mom's lamp, Greg needing his own room, Bobby falling out of the treehouse or Jan wanting to be a brunette can be solved in 20 minutes you know you have come to the right place. This is great and recommended for children of any age.

Sit back and get lost in Bradyland.
