Book Description

The Bridge on the Drina is a vivid depiction of the suffering history has imposed upon the people of Bosnia from the late 16th century to the beginning of World War I. As we seek to make sense of the current nightmare in this region, this remarkable, timely book serves as a reliable guide to its people and history.

"No better introduction to the study of Balkan and Ottoman history exists, nor do I know of any work of fiction that more persuasively introduces the reader to a civilization other than our own. It is an intellectual and emotional adventure to encounter the Ottoman world through Andric's pages in its grandiose beginning and at its tottering finale. It is, in short, a marvelous work, a masterpiece, and very much sui generis. . . . Andric's sensitive portrait of social change in distant Bosnia has revelatory force."—William H. McNeill, from the introduction

"The dreadful events occurring in Sarajevo over the past several months turn my mind to a remarkable historical novel from the land we used to call Yugoslavia, Ivo Andric's The Bridge on the Drina."—John M. Mohan, Des Moines Sunday Register

Born in Bosnia, Ivo Andric (1892-1975) was a distinguished diplomat and novelist. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1961. His books include The Damned Yard: And Other Stories, and The Days of the Consuls.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ivo Andri'' has sparked my interest..., Sep 24 2006

This review is from: The Bridge on the Drina (Paperback)
Ivo Andri' has sparked my interest in the regions surrounding the Drina, the many peoples that come in contact with it, and in his writing itself. His skillful depiction of the lives wound about the solid white stone structure connecting the East and the West draws one in time and time again. I look forward to discovering more riches in this work of Andri''s upon a second reading.

The value of this book is more than the sum of the content and the style. Andri' makes a definitive statement regarding the underlying truths of the region and it's trials and tribulations. Each effort to live on an individual basis, and the motivations and aspirations that complicate those lives all speak out in his book for acknowledgment.

In my opinion, Andri' is a master writer, from whom any artist who wishes to know what his art is truly meant to be could learn volumes.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece, Jun 28 2004

This review is from: The Bridge on the Drina (Paperback)
Some years ago I set out to read something by all of the Nobel Prize novelists. This has resulted in some long searches and some (occassionally) boring books. However, it has, in general, been a most rewarding experience. One of the highlights thus far has been "discovering" "The Bridge on the Drina". Although I read the book 14 years ago, it has stayed with me.

The basic story is using the construction of a bridge centuries ago to trace the history of the Balkan area (and, occassionally, country) of Bosnia. What makes the book interesting is what makes that area interesting; the many different ethnic groups that fought over and, sometimes, co-existed in this region where the Muslim crusades were stopped but not repulsed. There are many stories centered around the bridge and they tell not only of the history of the area but of the people as well. This is a well-written, absorbing book. I have read several other books since by Ivo Andric and they have been worthwhile as well. However, it is "The Bridge on the Drina" that properly marked him as one of the better European authors of the 20th Century. This is a literary experience that you should not miss.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Powerful and Moving, Mar 28 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: The Bridge on the Drina (Paperback)
Ivo Andric possessed a gift that few writers have had. He was able to put historic facts in a readable almost mystifying format that made this book a master piece, even though the word is now terribly overused, The Bridge on The Drina is a master piece and Andric is a masterful story teller as he is a writer. The story that Andric presents is a powerfully moving story and is based on historic fact. It does not only give the reader a better perspective to view the conflicts in the Balkans of the 90's and the recent Kosovo trouble, but it also supplies the reader with a better understanding of a conflict that traces it's roots to the 14th century, that can be used in understanding war's and conflicts based on ethnicity and religions else where.
