Book Description

The Brueghels, Pieter the Elder, Pieter Brueghel the Younger (“Hell Brueghel”) and

Jan Brueghel the Elder (“Velvet Brueghel”), embody one of the largest dynasties of Flemish painting. Beyond their history, their masterworks bear witness to the priceless contribution of this family in the evolution of northern European painting.

Refusing the canons of Italian mannerism, the masterworks printed here illustrate the artistic independence of the Brueghels and the Flemish Renaissance. In popular and allegorical scenes, Pieter the Elder and his heirs denounce the daily preoccupations of the people and the general unrest due to the Spanish occupation. In this splendid, richly documented work, the authors, Émile Michel and Victoria Charles, shed new light on Flemish painting from the 15th to the 17th century.

About the Author

Honorary chairman of the University of Amsterdam, Émile Michel is one of the most eminent specialists of Flemish painting. Indeed, with his writings Rembrandt’s Masterworks and Rubens: His Life, Works and Times, he remains a reference in this domain. His work on the Brueghel family is a brilliant analysis as well as a colourful family portrait.

Victoria Charles received her PhD in art history. She has published extensively on art history and has contributed to Art Information, an international art guide. She is a regular contributor to journals and magazines. She recently contributed to a collective work, 1000 Paintings of Genius.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bruegel and Sons May 13 2013
Format:Hardcover
This wonderful book charts the course of the artistic Brueghel family, from Pieter (the elder) to his two sons, Pieter (the younger) and Jan the elder (apparently Jan’s son was also a painter). While the book focuses mainly on Pieter the elder (undoubtedly the master of the three) it is interesting to chart the similarities and differences between the father and two sons. The book is compact but filled with brilliant quality stills of the three painters’ works, and Emile Michel and Victoria Charles do a great job working with the little biographical information known about the three artists, and add historical information with details of Flemish painting between 1400-1600.

For fans of Brueghel (s), or of Flemish paintings in general, this is a must buy!

I don't know where else to report this, but the paragraph attached to the entry for The Brueghels is about some other book. Amazon if you read these reviews, please fix it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great information on Brueghel Feb. 24 2013

This book has practically everything there is to know about the Brueghels (mainly Pieter the Elder). There actually isn't a whole lot known about him, especially considering how important of an artist he was & continues to be. But the historical information that is known is well presented here, as well as insightful interpretations of his works. There are lots of full color reproductions of his art, and the quality of the reproductions is very good. Unfortunately it's a very small book & they would have looked so much better at a larger size. That's my main reason for taking 1 star off the overall rating here. But for anyone interested in Pieter Brughel, this book is really a must have & I highly recommend picking it up.
