Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Christopher Titmuss (Light on Enlightenment) culls together brief daily reflections in The Buddha's Book of Daily Meditations: A Year of Wisdom, Compassion, and Happiness. With just one quick quotation for each day of the year, the book at first glance appears superficial but these excerpts are deceptively simple. Readers who take the time to engage them fully will profit from their paradoxical wisdom.

4.0 out of 5 stars Daily Reading, July 21 2004

This review is from: The Buddha's Book of Daily Meditations: A Year of Wisdom, Compassion, and Happiness (Paperback)
I have found this daily reading book to be very close to what I was looking for. All the excerpts are from the Pali Canon which

is what I wanted. There are a couple of ways the book could be improved though.

One thing that disappointed me was that rather than having the citation on the same page as the excerpt they are

grouped together in the back of the book.

The other thing that is disappointing is that the editor chose to change some important words. Many of these discourses were spoken to the Bhikkhus by the Buddha. The editor leaves out words like Bhikkhu.

Even though I would prefer that the original words were left in place this book is a good reference to point one toward the more scholarly translations.

I use this as part of my morning devotions. The translation is not good. Many sentences are poorly structured. Sometimes the language is impenetrable. I will stick with this for now, but eventually will look for something with better English.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not for Beginners, Feb 26 2011

This year I decided to start a spiritual practice of devotion on a daily basis. I thought a daily book of meditations would be a great way to inspire me and guide me along the way of keeping this very personal promise/goal. I am at the stage where I am determining what my values most align with Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism, eastern religion, western religion, etc... Since I grew up Christian, I knew this way of life and philosophy does not fit with who I am as a person. Anyway, I decided to get two books. One on Taoism and another on Buddhism. Since I am a beginner, it would be very helpful to have a paragraph or two on the meaning of the suttas. The author only gives you the sutta with sometimes no understanding of how this applies to modern life and since I know very little about Buddhism, these suttas did not help me at all. In fact, they confused me more than anything. I give this book only two stars for the beginners. For advanced people who have been studying Buddhism, they may understand this book much more than I. It would be great to have a beginning Buddha daily meditation book that describes the meaning of the suttas for self-discovery in the modern world. For anyone reading this review, I do wish you well on what ever journey you choose.
