Book Description

Oct 16 2008
Imelda Dooley is scared. Really scared. She's played hard and fast and now she's been caught. She's pregnant and now she's on her own. Her father, not a man to mess with, will see that somebody pays for this. And it's not going to be her. So Imelda Dooley tells a lie. A lie that literally causes murders. When Mary Dooley's husband is killed in the night's events, she knows she must graft to keep the family afloat. And graft she does, becoming a name in her own right. But she still has to watch her daughter's life spiral into a vicious, hate-fuelled cycle of drugs and prostitution. Caught up in the carnage that is Imelda's existence are Mary's adored grandchildren, Jordanna and Kenny. Pretty little Jordanna isn't yet three and she already knows far too much. All she can do is look after her baby brother, Kenny, and try not to draw unwanted attention to herself. Set in the East End of London from the tail-end of the seventies up until the present-day, THE BUSINESS is a tale of drugs, prostitution and a young girl's fight for survival -- against all the odds.

Follows the same vein as all other Cole novels - if you like that formula you will enjoy this book. No great surprises, fairly predictable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Crazy Life Of A Drug Addict! July 25 2010
By D. Williamson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
The Business gives us a shocking insight into the life of a drug addict and what ends she will go to for her drug of choice. It amazes the mind to see how drug addicts use everyone and anyone around their world, especially family. The story is realistic, believable and entertaining, and is well worth the read.

2.0 out of 5 stars The Business Nov 6 2011
By Greggles - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Being a huge fan of Martina Cole I have purchased most of her books but have to say that I was really disappointed with this one. She repeatedly describes a character over and over again making this a chore t read rather than a pleasure. Having managed pubs in the areas that she writes her stories are very close to the truth. I almost wonder if her background is also in this area.
2.0 out of 5 stars BORING Feb 8 2013
By Lola Simone - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have read a few of Martina Cole's books and while I have enjoyed the others, this book was very hard getting through. The first 100 pages were just descriptions of the characters over and over and over, the rest of the book was a short story and descriptions of the characters over and over and over. After the 10th time being told how dull Imelda's brothers were I wanted to scream at my Kindle, and yes we get it, Imelda is beautiful and she has no thought for anyone but herself, we do not need to be reminded of that fact everytime her name is mentioned. The story on it own would have been strong but the endless, repetitive descriptions of the characters killed the book for me. Also the characters all started out thinking one thing of the people in their lives and within a few pages changes their mind and suddenly this person is the exact opposite of what they started off saying. This book just seemed to plod along and it made reading a chore. If this is your first name reading Martina do not start with this book because you will miss out on someone who have written some really good books.
