Product Description

From Amazon.com

Despite each of them possessing the requisite technique to succeed as a concert virtuoso, the five members of the Canadian Brass have instead dedicated themselves to the classical-lite market. This decision might be denying us some superb performances of the standard brass fare, but, as the group's many fans will attest, the ensemble can do corny crossover fun like nobody's business. This Christmas special, featuring unsophisticated but undeniably rollicking arrangements of beloved holiday songs (some performed in accompaniment of the reedy-voiced adolescents of the Bach Children's Chorus), ably shows off why the Canadian Brass's popularity has remained so evergreen. Whether tubaist Charles Daellenbach is jovially oompahing the bass notes of "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" or Jens Lindemann is spinning out a dexterous line in "Angel Choir and the Trumpeter," the quintet's combination of considerable skill and unpretentious geniality makes up for the occasional crassness of the presentation. A Christmas Experiment's aptly surnamed director Barbara Willis Sweete barely lets a minute pass without focusing on another adorable child's face beaming into the camera, a nudging but still cute touch that's of a piece with the group's anything-to-entertain-you esthetic. Dressing up in silly costumes (extra credit to trombonist Eugene Watts for donning the charmingly ridiculous outfit of a splay-footed spinning top), and positively shameless in their eclecticism (in the course of a single number showy baroque flourishes collide head-on with limber Dixieland workouts and much burbling silliness), the Canadian Brass is all about crowd-pleasing. With music making this merry, it's hard not to be pleased. --Bruce Reid

5.0 out of 5 stars They did just fine: Treat Yourself to Some Christmas Spirit, Nov 16 2004
By lelwon "lelwon" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Canadian Brass: A Christmas Experiment (DVD)
This is my very first review on Amazon, but I am taking the time because I think the other reviewer was too technically critical in his review and you might miss a really fine Christmas treat if you just went by his review.

Simply put, my family and our friends loved this DVD of the Canadian Brass. Their great rendition of beloved Christmas carols coupled with the natural charm of their children served as a perfect backdrop to my Christmas party last year because the film has no voice-over dialogue. I highly recommend this DVD to anyone looking for one that captures the joy and fun and charm of the season. It's well worth the purchase.

3.0 out of 5 stars They can do better!, Jan 2 2001
By Marcel Boom - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Canadian Brass: A Christmas Experiment (DVD)
I bought this DVD because I am a fan of Canadian Brass and I wanted to see what they could do with a medium as DVD. I must say that I am a little bit dissapointed. Not of the level of the entertainment or of the level of the 5 musicians but of the level of the DVD. It looks like it has been taken directly, without any other enhancements from the television and put on the disc. DVD can do so much better and specially with this kind of group of musicians I expected somewhat more. Why not do the same kind of "joy" and "fun" on the DVD itself?

Another, somewhat dissapointing, remark is that at least some of the clips seem to be in "play-back" mode which I can understand, but it makes watching the clips somewhat harder as a musician (you see the fingers move on the cylinders, but you do not hear different notes). This bothers me perhaps the most because I do like the "live" appearences of the Canadian Brass because of their ability to do all those acts on stage and perform on a high musicaly standard at the same time.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun Christmas video to watch while decorating your tree-, Jan 3 2008
By K. Rickey - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Canadian Brass: A Christmas Experiment (DVD)
Would like to have more music performed by the Canadian Brass ensemble; but cute video of a small intimate musical play/performance for family & friends with touching commentary about Christmas and the Holidays from the children in the performance. We watched it a few times while decorating the tree and such...
