Book Description

Dec 1 2007
This guide provides a comprehensive overview of financial-management issues for Canadians living in the United States in clear and simple language. Facing unique and challenging tax and financial-planning considerations in each country, this reference has in-depth information on the implications of opening bank and investment accounts in the United States, the management of investment and registered accounts in Canada, cross-border retirement planning, and foreign exchange issues. It includes information on recent changes to the Canada–U.S. income tax treaty and strategies to reduce or eliminate estate taxes on U.S. assets. Through improved awareness of the financial, immigration, health care, insurance, tax, and estate-planning differences between the two countries, snowbirds will learn to make smarter financial decisions and make the most of the dual-residency lifestyle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buying and Investing in U.S. Real Estate Aug. 5 2010
Format:Paperback
Buying U.S. real estate is hazardous for Canadians novice in the field. This book provides indispensable information regarding tax consequences, how couples should take title, estate implications, banking strategies, and mandatory forms necessary for opening a U.S. bank account and obtaining a U.S. ITIN (analogous to our social insurance number). Not only is this book a vital resource that is well researched, practical and helpful, but Terry Ritchie, himself, is also most accommodating, available and approachable when called upon to clarify any suggestions, ideas or processes detailed in this outstanding guide. We are presently assessing the viability of purchasing a U.S. property and between this book and the author himself we believe we are saving ourselves, time, money, mistakes and headaches. This book is a must have for any Snowbird contemplating living and investing in the United States!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Canadian Snowbird in America May 20 2009
Format:Paperback
I am planning my first Snowbird Vacation. This book was recommended to me by a friend who went to Florida this past winter. She said it will answer everything you need to know. She certainly was right! It was written in a way that the average person can understand. You don't need to be a 'financial' type person to get the most from this book. I highly recommend it.

Very comprehensive treatment of the many differences in tax rules between Canada and the US. Very clearly written, easy to understand and well laid out. Seems to cover all the bases and in ways that a non-tax attorney can understand! Required reading for any Canadians considering a US real estate purchase. Highly recommended - these guys really know their stuff!
