Book Description

Nov. 7 2007
Each year, more than a million Canadians, affectionately dubbed "Snowbirds," migrate to southern climes to enjoy warm weather and sandy beaches. The strong Canadian dollar is making the trip more affordable and attractive than ever. But post-9/11, Canadians face tighter security, higher health costs, and higher fuel costs when traveling to the US. Canadians must budget accordingly. Especially for first-timers, how can they properly plan their trip to ensure a worry-free time away from home?

Among the topics this book includes are: the Snowbird lifestyle; financial planning; what documents you need to enter the US; what types of insurance and coverage are recommended; ensuring you have an up-to-date will; how US tax law applies to Canadians if money is earned or property sold; snowbirding in Mexico and Costa Rica; plus FAQs, checklists, and sources of further information.

From the Back Cover

The Canadian Snowbird Guide has been a national best-seller since its first publication in 1992. Now in its fourth edition, the guide is bigger and better than ever as it keeps pace with Canadian Showbirds who are wintering beyond traditional destinations. Snowbirds are also spending more time outside Canada and need to know the rules and regulation for extended stays when it comes to health insurance needs and ensuring their finances and estate planning are in proper order.

Here are a few of the key topics and innovative ideas that The Canadian Snowbird Guide covers:

  • Financial planning for your extended stay in the Sunbelt
  • What you need to know about immigration and customs procedures when travelling to the United States
  • Options for out-of-country medical insurance coverage
  • Taking care of your insurance needs for your car, condo, or RV
  • Ensuring your will and trust are updated
  • The do's and don'ts of buying real estate in the Sunbelt
  • Tax-planning strategies when living part-time in the United States
  • Using a home exchange strategy to help cover the costs of your time in the sun
  • Snowbirding in Mexico
  • What you need to know if you plan to live permanently outside Canada
  • Forms and checklists to help you organize your trip

Snowbirds can plan their trips south with confidence and peace of mind knowing that all the housekeeping detailed have been attended to. But don't leave home without taking The Canada Snowbird Guide along—it's an essential reference guide to enjoy your stay in the sun!

I have been a Snowbird for the past 3 years and wish I had read this book before I started this active lifestle, which I love. It would have saved me a lot of hassle and confusion on all the insurance and tax implications.

It is an excellent book. Very practical and easy to read and packed full of helpful ideas, advice, and invaluable tips. I would highly recommend it to any existing or potential Snowbird, or those who know one.

Top notch information all around. I recently came across Mr. Gray's other book on owning recreational properties and decided to give this one a shot. If you're planning to move to the US or already live there I guarantee that you won't regret making this purchase. Every possible detail that you would ever want to know about is covered in this book. Highly recommended stuff.

This book is excellent. A lot better than the recommended South of 49, which I also bought.

I'm sure that this book contains a lot of information that will help me decide whether to become a snowbird or not but it would have been nice to hear first hand the stories of other snowbirds and their experiences.
