The Best Live Material was left in the vaults for 35 years,
By
This review is from: The Cellar Door Sessions 1970 (Audio CD)
I had a bookleg copy of this set some three years ago, This is amazing material - especially the sets from disc 2 and 4.When I bought the new remastered set, the sound quality difference was astonishing - Thank goodness for live sets in small venues.....Michael Henderson's bass playing was so much better on the first 4 discs. The whole band was in a major groove for the first four discs - dropping John Mclaughlin into the last two sets - kind of tamed down the group - they sounded a little more hesitant. This is a case where the record company released the weaker material because John McLaughlin was sitting in on the session. If you like the Live Evil tracks - this sets will amaze you....

Miles Revisited,

This review is from: The Cellar Door Sessions 1970 (Audio CD)
In fairness Columbia come out stating that material in this boxed sethas been previously issued . The main reason to purchase this 6 CD package is more Keith Jarrett and the often unrecognized contribution of Sax-Man Steve Grossman . He just may have been the finest of the post Wayne Shorter era in Miles's Bands. Of the 10 sessions from the 4 night stay at the Cellar Club , six performances are featured giving the aficionado over 4 hour of new Miles .

The Cellar Door Sessions (The complete Evil, Live),

This review is from: The Cellar Door Sessions 1970 (Audio CD)
I have to admit up front, that I have not heard this CD. Well, that is not quite true. According to the NY Times, 80 minutes of this 6 CD collection is contained on the Live Evil LP which I have been re-visiting since I purchased it on LP more years ago than I can remember. There are many good reviews of Live Evil available and I am sure that this new complete collection of that brief period of time will engender the same response. The New York Times review of Monday December 26, 2005, in the Arts section resembles my own reaction to the original Live Evil release. This is music that will challenge you. Miles was an artist and as such, he bravely took his genuis to lands that others find difficult to travel. There are those who continue to reject this jazz fusion period of Miles Davis as an aberration not worthy of his mastery. I disagree. The terrain may be foreign, but worth the journey. The studio LP Bitches Brew released by Miles in 1970 changed my perception of Jazz and music in general. These live sessions are an extension of that momentous work. Classical music requires educated attention. So do the works of comtemporay masters like Miles Davis. My 3 star rating of this CD does not reflect the quality of the music. The avid Miles Davis fan will most probably be richly rewarded. The casual Jazz fan, may find the destination not worth the journey. For those less committed, the Live Evil CD may suffice.
