Product Description

From Amazon.co.uk

In 1792, Edward Bunting invited his fellow Irish harpists to a festival in Belfast to celebrate the then-endangered art form. Bunting transcribed the tunes played at the festival, and his subsequent music books preserved traditional Celtic harp music for modern-day masters like Derek Bell of the Chieftains. The Chieftains and the Belfast Harp Orchestra met in Belfast for the bicentennial of Bunting's festival and recorded four numbers together two weeks later. The sound of fiddles, flute, pipes, bodhran and dozens of lap harps is at once big and yet strangely delicate. It inspired the Chieftains, who had been recording with American and British pop stars, to return to their strength: new instrumental arrangements of 17th and 18th-century Irish folk songs. No one does that better. --Geoffrey Himes

--Philippe Robert

This review is from: The Celtic Harp (Audio CD)
This excellent CD contains twelve traditional Irish tunes that were recorded by the incomparable Chieftains, in conjunction with the Belfast Harp Orchestra. The sounds produced are soothing, and quite enjoyable to listen to. In fact, this album was actually awarded the Best Traditional Folk Album award at the 1994 Grammies! So, if you like Irish harp music, or traditional Irish tunes, then you will love this album. My family and I highly recommend this CD to you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, relaxing music., April 20 2000

This review is from: The Celtic Harp (Audio CD)
Teh Belfast Harp Orchestra along with Derek "Ding-dong" Bell (Chieftains harpist) produce some truly wonderful compositions here. I never knew the harp could be so versatile - from slow laments to marches.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lovely Sound that never caught on ..., Mar 15 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Celtic Harp (Audio CD)
I love the sound of the Celtic Harp on this CD, and it's just a shame it never caught on... especially here in America, where the search for relaxing music seems to be neverending (and usually involves the sound of a babbling brook ... how droll ... ). The sound is beautiful, and the only vocal track a real treat.
