Book Description

Mar 20 2003 Images of America (Arcadia Publishing)
ìHow I marvel at [John Binderís] analysis. . . . We could have used [his] expertise during my 21 years on the FBI organized crime squads in Chicago. Where [was he] when we needed him?î

óWilliam F. Roemer Jr., author and former FBI agent

(in a letter written in 1993) No business, legitimate or otherwise, has had a more raucous influence on the history of a city than that of the Outfit in Chicago. From the roots of organized crime in the late 19th century to the present day, The Chicago Outfit examines the evolution of the city's underworld, focusing on their business activities and leadership along with the violence and political protection they employed to become the most successful of the Cosa Nostra crime families. Through a vivid and visually stunning collection of images, many of which are published here for the first time, author John Binder tells the story of the people and places of the world of organized crime from a fresh and informed point of view. 5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read! Oct 14 2003
Format:Paperback
John Binder rates among Chicago Gangland's most knowledgeable researchers. Those seeking information about the area's sordid past will not be disappointed by Binder's knowledgeable text and extraordinary photographs. His first book is an informative and delightful read - let's hope it's not his last!

Format:Paperback
Binder's volume on The Chicago Outfit is really comprehensive, spanning the better part of the twentieth century mob-scene in a great city and region. The text is clear and precise and moves deftly from decade to decade, but it is Binder's unique collection of photos that lends utter fascination to the book, everything from the gorey to the demure and dapper aspects of gangland figures and their lifestyles.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Marvelous Depiction! July 7 2003
Format:Paperback
John J. Binder's book tells the tale of organized crime in America from the turn of the century to more recent times. Unlike most books where there is a lot of dry text to read, John Binder instead illustrates this interesting and colorful node of American history through glorious photographs that depict how these men lived. Raw and unedited, they show us the true criminality invovled and the reasons why organized crime came to be one of the most successful operations ever to be run in America. Binder's book is a true gem to have, from historians, to people possessing a keen facsination for this particular subject!
