Product Description

From Library Journal

"The author unsparingly probes the thoughts and emotional undercurrents of each character in an old-fashioned yet dexterous exposition," said LJ's reviewer of this novel (LJ 5/1/73). The Chip-Chip Gatherers features a collection of ramshackle residents of a small village in Trinidad who have long since abandoned hope. Those who don't like their novels sugar-coated will find this "good reading."

Book Description

The author brings to life an unforgettable cast of characters set in a tightly knit Hindu community in Trinidad, against a backdrop of the idiosyncrasies of a particular culture and the sometimes hilarious, sometimes poignant truths about human society. "A compelling, tragic, painfully comic masterpiece." THE TIMES LITERARY SUPPLEMENT. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

A good solid story on the shallowest level, and a rather sarcastic social commentary on deeper levels. Well worth the time to read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Readable, but the characters are a bit too well defined., Sep 19 1998

I enjoyed the book (it's a good light read), but a lot of it was beating about the bush. The book did get better towards the end. I wonder if it was the writer's first book? Certainly his "North of South" was better written.
