About the Author
JoAnna Carl is the pseudonym of a multipublished mystery writer. She spent more than twenty-five years in the newspaper business, working as a reporter, feature writer, editor and columnist. She holds a degree in journalism from the University of Oklahoma and also studied in the OU Professional Writing Program. She lives in Oklahoma but spends much of her summer at a cottage on Lake Michigan near several communities similar to the fictional town of Warner Pier.

Great new book, better than the last few, Oct 20 2010

This is the first chocolate book in a while that I felt actually had a plot (a pirate plot!). Joanna Carl had been flagging a bit on her last few books, especially "The Chocolate Cupid Killings." I have read all of her books and I would say this is definitely in the top three. The books take place in the small town of Warner Pier, Michigan where Lee McKinney's Aunt Nettie owns a famous chocolate shop, Tenhuis Chocolade (supposedly pronounced Ten-Hice but I am still going to read it phonetically despite knowing this). The book revolves around a movie star, Marco Spear, some lake pirates who board ships and entertain passengers before disappearing into the evening and a yacht manufacturer. Carl did keep me guessing on whodunit, which is a new phenomenon for her and one I hope she continues. The whole concept of the plot line is very well conceived and well executed. Chocoholic fans who have been disappointed like me will find renewal in this excellent story. I hope Carl keeps books like these coming and perhaps I will shell out hardcover price.

Pirates in Warner Pier, well of course! Since a certain pirate movie became a huge success, Young Blackbeard, (what movie did you think I meant?) pirates are showing up everywhere. They even leaped aboard Joe and Lee's antique powerboat while they were out for a little cruise. The buccaneers hopped about doing a little jig, played a little music and performed a few acrobatics and then dove into the water and disappeared.The pirates visited a few more boats and great fun was had by all. It was the "Summer of the Warner Pier Pirates", heck the local playhouse was even gearing up to perform the Pirates of Penzance. Everything was swimming along nicely until a body was found floating in Lake Michigan with a Jolly Roger tattoo, then the fun quickly came to a halt. Lee decides to plunge herself into the investigation to find out exactly what these swashbucklers are up to.
I love this series and since Pirates are our high school mascot, I loved it even more. I am also a true CHOCOHOLIC!!! so this book is definitely perfect for me!! These stories are fast paced so be ready for some wild page turning fun with a chocolate twist. JoAnna Carl is a master storyteller when it comes to the cozy genre. By this 10th installment I feel like part of the TenHuis family, and love each and every predicament this family gets itself dipped into, no matter if it is milk chocolate or the deepest darkest chocolate, you always have to be ready for the surprise gooey center. Reading these books is a truly tasty morsel with zero calories.

The entire country has gotten pirate fever since the release of Young Blackbeard, a huge blockbuster movie. It's even found its way to the resort town of Warner Pier, Michigan. TenHuis Chocolade is offering chocolate pirate chests, and the local theater company is ending their season with Pirates of Penzance.There are also a group of pirates who are boarding local pleasure cruises on Lake Michigan. Lee, Joe, and a couple of friends are the first "victims." These pirates are harmless since all they do is put on a fun acrobatic display before leaving. In fact, being boarded seems to be something of a status symbol this summer. Until someone disappears while swimming and another body is found. Could the pirates be involved?
I will admit the book was very confusing at the beginning. There were so many plot threads introduced and then seemingly dropped, it was hard to tell exactly what the story was even about. Everything became clear at the end, and it proved to be one of the best books in the series.
The books in this series have always been short, so the characters are often short changed. That was certainly the case here as several series regulars only merit a mention. The book is full of new characters, however, and they were great.
These books are always light, fun reads, and this book was no exception. If you are a fan of the series, you'll enjoy the latest.
