When one thinks of the earliest years of the 20th Century in America, ribald erotica is not the first thing that springs to mind. However, if a gentleman lived in a major city like New York, Chicago or New Orleans, he had more sexual entertainment available to him than his descendants do today - brothels and prostitutes where everywhere and advertised openly. For consumers outside of sophisticated metropolises, the art of photography was put to use by enterprising photographers and models more than willing to bare it all and lasciviously flaunt it in this new medium. Film inevitably followed, and became the perfect vehicle for capturing the raw nuances of every sexual activity under the sun, or the studio lights, as it were.
The Christy Report examines, decade by decade, the advances and evolution of this underground art form - the changes in erotic tastes over the years from now quaintly soft-core cheesecake, through the fetish-y 50s, the anything goes au natural 60s; the hard-core, so called “golden age” of porn in the 70s and 80s; up to the ubër gods and goddesses of idealized 90s porn sporting the biggest, most perfect breasts and gigantically unflagging erections ever-ready for the money shot. Consistent throughout are explicitly hot shots of bare-naked ladies and rampant men - The Christy Report, though certainly very educational for the scholar of porn, is also a very hot book, crammed with nearly 1000 arousing images perfect for a different kind of study session!

The book has some interesting vintage erotic photos, but virtually no attempt is made to place them in any historical context. The text is uninformative and useless. A waste of money!

A Report on porn?,

This book can hardly be considered an in-depth report on American commercial sexual activity. John Quinn's text, in sixty or so pages, is a superficial overview of the last hundred years illustrated with a few vintage porn and burlesque photos, I would have expected to see examples of Tijuana Bibles, burlesque and film posters, men's magazine covers, video boxes, adult web-site home pages etc, etc. Dian Hansen contributes an interesting short postscript on the future of porn.What fills the majority of the book are hundreds of hard-core photos which seem to come from the output of Californian porn producer Leoram (they even have an ad on page 440) Kim Christy I guess has some connection with this company. The book designer, Armando Chitolina from Milan, assumes all this very (interesting) explicit material will bore the readers so he liberally splashes color panels, text and abstract shapes over the photos. So, not really survey on American erotica, more a visual treat on what men and women get up to in the Los Angeles sex biz!

NO, REALLY, THIS BOOK IS A GREAT EXPLORATION OF THE HISTORY AND EVOLUTION OF PORN, IT SHOWS, FOR ME AT LEAST, HOW PORN WAS GEARED TOWARD MEN AND WOMEN, BUT HAS TURNED INTO THIS DIRTY GIRL GENRE GEARED TOWARD MEN AND NOT AS SATISFYING FOR WOMEN (AT LEAST NOT THE ONES I KNOW) IT SHOWS THE ARTFULL APPROACH THAT SLOWLY TRANSITIONS INTO THE SLEEZY APPROACH OF COME SHOTS AND HEROIN CHIC.
