Additional Features

On this special VHS edition of The Cider House Rules, the film is followed by "The Cider House Rules: The Making of an American Classic," a somewhat presumptuously titled but otherwise engaging 20-minute featurette (also included on the DVD) comprising film clips and on-screen interview segments with the film's primary cast and director Lasse Hallström. The focus is on John Irving and his efforts to adapt his own novel, and Irving's fellow Maine writer Stephen King (looking worrisomely gaunt) is also included, offering his admiring comments about Irving's fiction and his ability to understand the editorial demands of writing for film. Overall, this is an interesting supplement to the film, if only for one or two viewings. --Jeff Shannon

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing !, Jan 20 2012
I originally read the book a long time ago and absolutely loved it (John Irving is my favorite writer, BTW !). When I first saw the movie at the cinema later on, I was really impressed by the cast of actors selected (especially Charlize Theron... !) and the expert way they acted; this is why, many moons later, I decided to buy the movie to see it again (during the X-Mas Holidays). A can't-miss movie !

3.0 out of 5 stars How could he do it?, Sep 27 2000
This review is from: NEW Cider House Rules (DVD) (DVD)
After seeing his work mauled by Simon Birch, Irving made a vow to do his own adaptations. And what a novel to start with: The Cider House Rules is a beautifully written ode to love. But read the book, then watch the film. You'll be amazingly disappointed at what was important and beautiful in the novel has become cheap and Hollywood-ized in the film (especially the ending). I missed this film during Oscar-hype and kept vowing to see it, then bought the DVD since I enjoyed the book so much. I was keenly disappointed. Don't get me wrong, though. On its own, the Cider House Rules film is a nice work of motion picture, with well-written dialogue, beautiful cinematography, and good performances. But to see what Irving did to his novel (in what I'm assuming is the interest of time and to give the film a more traditional happy ending) is to see utter disappointment in this film. ATTENTION: Don't watch this movie and read the book because it intrigues you...and if you've read the book but haven't seen the film, don't. Let the characters live and breathe inside you.

5.0 out of 5 stars BEST FILM, Aug 31 2002
By A Customer
The one and only reason I wanted to view this movie is because of Tobey Maguire. So I put the movie in expecting to fast forward to just the scenes with him in them. The more I watched the more attached I became. The story is so compelling it pulls anyone into it. The book wasn't so great but the movie is a MUST SEE. I loved every moment of it. I was even sad to take it back to the movie rental store in which I had gotten it. So not even 24 hours later I had purchased the film. It is one of the best i've seen. Definately one of my favorites in my collection.
