4.0 out of 5 stars if you don't have the magazines Oct 27 2011
By K. Platt - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Any fan of Cloth Paper Scissors, the US magazine will have been clawing to grab hold of a copy of this. However, when I started to flick through the pages I kept having a feeling of deja vu - sure enough, this is nothing more than a selection of the best articles that have appeared in the magazine. So my advice is, if you have the magazines but want a collection of the best articles, or preferably if you do not have any of the magazines - buy it. However, if you are happy with your magazines and don't want to pay again for the same articles - don't buy it. I would have thought there were enough unpublished articles for Cloth Paper Scissors to have presented us with new ideas. The blurb on the book does state clearly on the back cover that these articles have been previously published in the last six years of the magazine. It should be judged on its content not that a reader may already have the magazines. The book includes all manner of work and media, ideas and inspiration for creating mixed media art. What it does, it does very well. There are ideas to get you started, printmaking with an excellent article on building layers by Beryl Taylor, one of my all-time favourite articles from the magazine, a good section on journals and book making, collage and assemblage - it gets a bit wild and wacky here, which is why I gave up my subscription to the magazine and switched to Quilting Arts, an interesting look at mixed media stitching and lastly selling your art, which offers ten tips and largely promotes Etsy, which I found amusing. This book should capture a new market, uninterested in magazines and subscriptions but willing to pay for a book from which they can gather ideas, inspiration and knowledge. 2.0 out of 5 stars A Mixed Bag Nov 26 2011
By North Country Artisans (Linda) - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I am not a regular reader of the magazine, "Cloth, Paper, Scissors" and probably pick it up a couple of times a year. I read in a review that this book was sort of a compendium of techniques and projects by regular contributors to the magazine so I felt there would be some useful information within that I could add to my arsenal of other similar books. Mostly there wasn't, and I thought there was a lot of redundancy within the book. Many of the projects kind had the same look. Oh...and, whether you think this is a good or a bad thing, there is a fair amount of machine sewing on paper and paper canvas amongst several of the projects. Unless you have a huge art supply cache, you'll either have to go out and buy things you might not ever use again or be creative and interpretive and use what you have on hand, Of course this is not the only art journaling book where that trap exists for you and your wallet to fall into. After all, most authors of these books get all the new art/craft products that comes out free if they publish, teach or demonstrate something using the latest and greatest.

I own many similar books on art journaling that are deeper in terms of instruction than this book so I guess I would not recommend this for an absolute neophyte who doesn't have a clue where to start when confronted with a blank page. Another criticism is that in many of the projects, the directions are a bit sketchy (pardon the pun). There are lots of better books our there for those who want ideas and basic or mid-level techniques for art journaling. Gwen Diehn's books, "The Decorated Journal" and "The Decorated Page" come to mind. If you like a more vintage look in your collages and art journals, you can't go wrong with Tim Holtz's DVDs. I guess my bottom line is that your money is better spent in other places.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best of CPS! Oct 12 2011
By Normajean Brevik - Published on Amazon.com

Even if you have every issue of CPS like I do, you will still appreciate this book. Each article was carefully chosen for it's uniqueness. AND finding the meandering book on page 62 was a thrill as I've tried to find this in my back issues and wasn't able to. I plan to use this book in a book study in my Fiber Art Traders group! This book gets two thumbs up from me, congrats Barb!
