We have read this book on Christmas Eve for years, since my children were wee, and then I would drape the tree in icicles after the children were in bed. No longer wee children, but I wanted a copy of the original one we read... this is it!
Delivery was very long... it was said to take 14-21 days, and arrived 32 days. It was shipped over the Christmas period, but would have expected quotes to adjust for that.
Book in great shape, though!

Nice story but poorly presented. Jan. 2 1998
By Glenda - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
A German woman cleans her house in preparation for Christmas. Then she invites her neighbors, farm animals, and wild creatures into her home to enjoy her tree. However, she never thinks to invite the spiders in. On Christmas Eve when the Christkindel comes, the spiders ask him to let them into the house to see the tree, which he does. As the spiders explore the tree, they cover it with their webs, which the Christkindel tranforms into beautiful tinsel. Thus explaining the tradition of tinsel.
I enjoyed the story but found the presentation flawed. Germans use comforters on their beds and not patchwork quilts, yet the woman is shown shaking out a patchwork quilt. In Germany, the Christkindel (Christ child) is the one who brings gifts on Christmas Eve, but he is portrayed looking like a slim, diminutive, American Santa Claus. Also, only a fraction of the many spiders shown have the requisite number of eight legs.
I enjoyed the story but will search for a different version of it before purchasing a copy for myself.
Lovely traditional Christmas story Dec 16 2012

Christmas stories are "a dime a dozen", so I'm always on the lookout for an especially meaningful one. The Cobweb Christmas is a gem. It tells the story of how tinsel came to be used on Christmas trees. This is a medium-length story, so one for kids who've developed an attention span. If you're looking for something different that focuses on the magic and beauty of the holiday then you're sure to enjoy The Cobweb Christmas.

I feel as though I have reviewed this before, but it not, it was perfect! Great story and illustrations explain the derivation of the custom to put tinsel and garland on a Christmas tree! This former library edition was in perfect shape with a plastic jacket which allows me many readings, both to my grandchildren and students in elementary classes in which I visit and read! Thank-you!

GREAT CHRISTMAS STORY . DELIGHTFUL, IMAGES ARE GREAT, SENTIMENT IS BEAUTIFUL . A FINE STORY FOR CHILDREN AT CHRISTMAS.
I BOUGHT IT FOR MY GRAND-DAUGHTER. I READ IT TO MY OWN CHILDREN AND KINDERGARTENERS AT THEIR SCHOOL LONG AFTER THEY HAD GRADUATED. I GAVE A COPY TO THE TEACHER FOR FUTURE LITTLE ONES WHO PASS THROUGH HER CLASS .DON'T MISS IT.

I have fond memories of reading this book with my Mom and sister growing up when we lived in germany. However I don't know if its for younger kids - the spiders might scare them and there are a lot of words. But it is a cute story of how tinsel came to be and teaches about Christmas with the little old lady making presents for everyone.
