Killer concept, questionable execution...,

This review is from: The Collector / Le collectionneur sadique (DVD)
This one was a real mixed bag for me. The story itself is a great idea: the petty thief trying to keep his desperate family afloat by robbing a wealthy family he has been working for, only to find that he needs to become a hero and save the people he set out to victimize. Shockingly, there is a sadistic maniac already in their home at the moment of his poorly timed break-in. There were definitely some very tense moments. And The Collector himself was really menacing, wordlessly pursuing his victims from behind an intimidating mask, the only part of him visible his unnaturally luminous eyes shining from the darkness. However, the filmmakers seem determined to tread into the overdone and tired cliche that is torture porn. There is no discernible reason for why a man who apparently enjoys collecting live victims needs to spend so much time and effort gruesomely maiming them. And the ridiculously complicated series of booby traps he sets up around the house seem to be a poorly disguised cash grab at the Saw franchises' success. The bloody violence has no real tie to plot. And so a movie that had the potential to be a really original and entertaining thriller descends into a nonsensical display of pointless brutality.
