2.0 out of 5 stars Long Awaited Return?, May 8 2009

This review is from: The Collegium Chronicles #1 Foundation (Hardcover)
Let me make one thing clear, I love Mercedes Lackey, I really really do, Arrows of the Queen brought back to me all the wonder of first learning to read.

So I was quite suprised on my second read through to discover I didn't like this latest installment

While I was looking foreward to a return to Valdemar, this book just didn't live up to my high expectations. I didn't really feel like there was an overall story, the characters seemed to lack some development after the original, I felt like there was a bunch of characters that came out of nowhere, like the end was just stapled on and not a growth of situations or characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good read, Mar 9 2010
This review is from: The Collegium Chronicles #1 Foundation (Hardcover)
I loved this book, but then I like the whole series of Valdemar and the Elemental Mages. I hope the second comes out soon, because the way it ends really makes me want to see what will come next.

4.0 out of 5 stars Slow Building, But Entrancing, Nov 19 2009
By
Tara Milsom (Nova Scotia, Canada) - See all my reviews

I have been a fan of Mercedes Lackey for as long as I can remember. And when I heard that there was going to be another Valdemar book, well, to say that I was excited would be the understatement of the year. The entire Valdemar series is one that I read over and over again, each time anticipating reading the next book or trilogy no matter how many times I have read them in the past. When this book came out, I booked the day off work and rushed out to pick up my preordered copy. As soon as I got home, I got to reading. And for the first time, I was having a hard time reading it. The first half was slow building. I had a really difficult time actually getting in to it. I even remember telling another long time Lackey fan that it seems like it is just another 'poor kid gets chosen, saves the world story'. But, even while thinking that, I still continued to read on. And I am glad that I did. After the slow start, things really started to pick up speed. Characters are introduced, events happen, enemies appear, and you can only begin to ask who and what exactly is going to have the larger parts expected of them in the next book! Just as in the rest of the Valdemar Trilogies, you can only guess what is foreshadowing to the next instalment. Despite my early thoughts on the beginning of the book, I was thoroughly entranced by the end, and eagerly await the next book in the series!
