Definitely one of the more unusual, intriguing and rewarding books on self-development and living a fulfilling life that I have read in a long time.
The author's primary theme is that, as we go through life, every one of us creates our own network of family, friends, colleagues and other people who have impacted us along the way. This network is one of our strongest and durable assets and is often the one we make the least use of.
Danny Lyon contends that one of the most important keys to success (and he has an entire, wonderful chapter on the many different definitions of "success" are available through his own network) is to use the talent and energy or our own networks to support and motivate us to dare and to achieve so much more than we could on our own. But - and this is a really important "but" - this can only happen if one is willing to expose oneself, one's fears, one's ambitions and, most importantly, one's shortcomings to our network. Only by allowing others to know what one really wants and needs can they help, support and inspire.
Danny is also an amazing story-teller Not the fables and fantasies of childhood (and occasionally arrested adulthood!) but the stories of things that have happened to him that have their own message and were rich seams of learning. He has an ability to create the situation, convey the events and relationships that were important and relevant at the time, and to teach the lesson of exposure that shows the way to greatness and to success.
To be candid, the book does show some signs of hasty editing in places and some of the otherwise excellent worksheets and record-keeping charts would be much more user-friendly if provided in a full-page format (and it now appears that they are, in fact, available as downloads from the author's website, so play fair, buy the book and follow the instructions to obtain the downloads).
And in the interest of full disclosure, I should mention that I have known Danny Lyon for a number of years and have always admired his ability to communicate his own infectious enthusiasm for life, for friends and for helping others. Nevertheless, I was surprised at the depth of content, insight and fresh awareness that this book gave me. Thank you, Danny, for sharing this with the world and for exposing yourself for our benefit!
