A major criticism of the Foo Fighters' self-titled debut was its supposed lack of, you know, passion among the well-crafted songs and well-crafted rock. This time out, if it's wreckage you want, it's wreckage you get. The Colour & the Shape grows deeper the more it's played, with the band's ripping power more than matched by Dave Grohl's fascinating examinations of pain and divorce. There's even a convincing long slow ballad, "November Stars," whose intensity should win over doubters. If that doesn't work, then the screaming "My Hero" will. --Rickey Wright

5.0 out of 5 stars MY POOR BRAIN!! Dec 23 2013
By FRED
Format:Audio CD
A relentless onslaught of pure rage and bliss. This is the peak of brilliance for Dave Grohl and company. Sure the others that followed are good, some less than others, but this will be the one that goes down in history as a masterpiece..

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the best Foo Fighters of them all July 19 2004
Format:Audio CD
"The Colour and the Shape" is the best Foo Fighters album, and that's saying a lot as they're all pretty good.
What sets it apart and above the rest is the depth of the album. For instance, while "There is Nothing Left to Lose" begins with three great songs it sort of tapers off as the album progresses. Not so with "The Colour and the Shape."
Songs like "Monkey Wrench", "My Hero", "Everlong", and "Walking After You" are well-known (and maybe slighly overplayed when it comes to the first two) but all 13 songs are quality listens. Moreover, the album grows on you with each spin -- I remember liking some songs but not others at first but now really like the whole thing. I really doubt this is an album you would grow tired of or only hear a lot at first and then let collect dust.
I think the Foo Fighters are one of the coolest bands around and this represents the coolest of their work. Each song is pretty good; the guitar on this album is rugged and hard-charging without ever devolving into headache-inducing noise.

5.0 out of 5 stars Personnal favorite July 1 2006
Format:Audio CD
Even if they are all very good, this is my favorite Foo Fighters album. The first album had been created while Grohl was still with Nirvana and I think the future of the Foos might have been incertain at that time. This second album is where its really taking off! Dave Grohl has a very strong sense of composition and I think this album is a gem of rock music. For another side of Mr.Grohl, check out Probot, another result of this amazing composer.

5.0 out of 5 stars May I have the envelope please... Feb. 13 2006
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
"Everlong" by the Foo Fighters voted Best Song Ever by everybody, everywhere! (Narrowly beat out Led Zepplin's Stairway To Heaven, J.S. Bach's Fantasia & Fugue in G Minor, and The Captain & Tennille's Muskrat Love.)
Seriously (even though I was kinda being serious), Everlong IS one of the best rock songs you'll ever hear, and the rest of the album ain't too shabby either with standouts like "Monkey Wrench", "Hey, Johnny Park!", "Walking After You" and "My Hero". But if you don't get chills when Dave Grohl launches into the chorous of "Everlong" and the guitars kick in and the drummer starts doing his impression of a machine gun, well then I suggest you seek medical attention because you must be dead or something.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magnitude warps space and time... July 19 2004
Format:Audio CD
"Colour and the Shape" is plain and simply one of the best albums I have ever heard. Dave Grohl's musical genius should never be discounted, and his talents far surpass almost anyone in the business today - simply put, he is a living legend. CATS is simply awesome, from the mellow opener 'Doll' to the sonic assault that is 'Monkeywrench'. Sonic assault is the perfect word to describe this album. The setup is interesting, as it goes from a series of short songs, that lead up to big ones. 'Up In Arms' is one of the small songs (great one at that) but its message and length is perfect as the drum intro to 'My Hero' begins. The last 4 tracks are an absolute treat and 'Everlong', 'Walking After You', and 'New Way Home' is about a strong a 1-2-3 punch to finish of an album as I have ever seen, rivaled by none other. "Colour and the Shape" is an absolutely essential album. Many years from now, the ripples left behind by Dave Grohl will be alongside names such as Dylan, Lennon, and Morrison, as the true legends of rock music. Very highly recommended.

This cd's for sure one of the Foo Fighter's best albums. All the songs are really original and a breath of fresh air. Lyrics are great, sound is great, I can't say anything bad about this album, all the songs are awsome.

How can anyone out there claim to be a rock fan without owning or experiencing this album. Everlong is one of the best written and produced songs, just listen to it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliance, passion and talent rarely equalled May 26 2004
Format:Audio CD
"Colour & The Shape" by the Foo Fighters is a powerful and evocative album that showcases not only Dave Grohl's songwriting abilities, but the tightness of the band. I won't go over each and every song, but there are three that I must comment on: "My Hero", "February Stars" and "Everlong" are extremely haunting melodies in the midst of a lot of straight-ahead rock and roll. While Dave has denied that any particular song is dedicated to or about Kurt, one senses his presence. I don't know why "Everlong" was rendered into such a droll video... it's a terribly moving, sad song, lyrically and musically. In any event, "Colour & The Shape" is a must-have for any true admirer of rock and/or musical craftsmanship.
