Based on Irish writer Roddy Doyle's novel and lovingly directed with admirable restraint by the sometimes bombastic Alan Parker, this quirky 1991 tribute to the enduring and universal power of American R&B took some cynical criticism for its reliance on Baby Boomer-era classics such as "Mustang Sally", "Take Me to the River", and "In the Midnight Hour". But that sword cuts two ways: by casting a motley crew of real musicians, including the guts 'n' gravel-voiced young vocalist Andrew Strong, Parker didn't have to do much coaxing to reveal the obvious respect and affection his players have for this music. This album includes wonderful covers of soul and jazz music. The male lead is raw and edgy with strong vocals. I believe he pays great homage to the artists he covers.

Having just completed my 10th+ viewing of this movie I remain convinced, it is very good. The music, the storytelling, and the quality of the production make this a classic in our household. When it becomes a little too quiet around the house or moods are low there is always a copy of "The Committments" ready to view. The question remains will there be a sequel? Andrew Strong please step up to the mike one more time!
