Product Description

Product Description

Like Jake & Elwood Blues a generation before, no film and band better projected the timeless power and appeal of classic soul music than THE COMMITMENTS. Marking its 15th Anniversary, The Commitments Deluxe Edition weds the two volumes of the soundtrack and augments them with a half-dozen beggers and shouters from lead vocalist Andrew Strong's debut solo album, previously unissued in the US.

Amazon.ca

Based on Irish writer Roddy Doyle's novel and lovingly directed with admirable restraint by the sometimes bombastic Alan Parker, this quirky 1991 tribute to the enduring and universal power of American R&B took some cynical criticism for its reliance on Baby Boomer-era classics such as "Mustang Sally", "Take Me to the River", and "In the Midnight Hour". But that sword cuts two ways: by casting a motley crew of real musicians, including the guts 'n' gravel-voiced young vocalist Andrew Strong, Parker didn't have to do much coaxing to reveal the obvious respect and affection his players have for this music. The material may not be fresh, but the love with which it's played is timeless. --Jerry McCulley --This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

although they are a cover band i have to say the commitments are excellent. I saw them play live once and they are extremely proffesional, which acounts for the quality on this cd. Andy strong although only sixteen when this was recorded has an extremely mature voice which could be compared to some of the real great souls singers of all time. There is a great range of songs on this cd with a good variety of different sounds( ie the songs don't all sound the same). the only thing that i must warn you about is that if you buy this cd you will want to hear more and more of the commitments, and there are only a couple albums made by them. the commitments volume 2 is also well worth getting and keep your eyes peeled for a live commitments album to be released in 2000 hopefully, i got a pre released copy and it is awesome.

After a weekend movie review, we were amazed to hear some great music. Immediately, we ran out to buy the soundtrack and couldn't stop listening. The music has a soul. It lives and breathes within the listener. Like a well-made movie, the more you listen to the sound track the more you get out of it. I challenge anyone who listens to this music to try and sit still. This music makes you move, smile, and just feel really good. For those of you who have a significant other, this sound track will make you grab them and start uncontrollably dancing. If you don't dance with them, I guarantee that they'll be smiling as they watch you start moving to the beat. All in all. If you never heard this sound track, then I recommend that you make it your next music purchase. This is a great new addition if you don't have it, and an ever better gift for those who love great music.

Man I love this music! White Irish guys singing soul -- who knew it would work so well?
If you like the stylings of Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, and Wilson Pickett, you've gotta pick this CD up. There's a lot of passion in these renditions of "Mustang Sally", "I can't Stand the Rain", and, my personal favorite, "Try A Little Tenderness". These covers take nothing away from their originals -- they're amazing. I like to sing along to them, and imagine myself as an Irish rocker. DEFINITELY pick this one up.
Oh, and definitely see the movie as well, if you haven't already.

I have to admit that I have never seen this movie, but I heard a couple of songs from it and just had to buy this album. I also had no idea until reading the rest of these reviews, that the lead singer Andrew Strong was only 16 when this was recorded. That blew me away. Amazing! The album may be full of covers of classic r&b and soul songs, but WOW, what fantastic covers they are. Just as good in many ways as the originals. I am not one for watching movies, I much prefer the auditory arts to the visual, but I think this is one film I will watch when I get the chance.

Wow! This album still holds up remarkably well after almost ten years. Of course that should surprise no one; not only is this a collection of some great songs, but the band's talent, professionalism and enthusiasm come shining through on every track. Andrew Strong remains one of the coolest vocalists I've ever heard...and he was only 16! The women singers are also excellent...If you've been on another planet and haven't heard this before, take the plunge and get it. It's impossible for me to imagine anyone not loving it, regardless of their musical tastes.

Well, do you want to feel sex without making it? Do you want to hear good music? Well, so you can do both things just hearing this soundtrack. If you haven't seen this movie (Alan Parker's The Commitments) you must see and I bet you will love the songs. For me "Destination Anywhere" is just one of the best ever made. And if you listen to this CD you will want to travel (in any way) just to hear this music feeling the strange sensation of wanting to arrive somewhere without knowing exactly where you want to arrive. Buy this CD, it's just wonderful...

Both Commitment CD's are essential to complete your "fix" for soul. This band has a rich, full, fat sound which thrusts through the speakers and clutches your heart. Andrew Strong's thick elastic voice is in parallel with great performers like Clapton, Lonnie Mack, SRV, and Pickett. The female leads voices, mainly Maria Doyle, exude the audio form of sex. I find myself hitting the repeat button over and over and over again. The only misgiving is that there are just two CD's in this collection.
