Great book, but please beware....... Feb. 16 2012

My son has read all of the Hero Tales books and all the Trailblazer books as well so I was excited when I saw this book by the Jacksons. I was surprised to find out that the book was graphic in some areas. I know this is about people who were martyred for their faith and while I expected some deaths to be violent I was not prepared for the graphic descriptions of the abuse suffered by some of the women martyrs. I am not saying I wouldn't have bought it, but I would have been more careful in letting my son read it on his own. Please be warned that there are descriptions of rape and other sexual abuse in the book.

I bought this book for my five year old and it is too much for him, but I have read many of the stories. I am learning so much about Christian history and the stories are well-told, seem accurate and are very convicting. A great choice for an adult or an older child!

Fascinating, informative and uplifting one as well! Nov. 12 2014
By Kurt A. Johnson - Published on
Format: Paperback
This wonderfully fascinating book contains over 200 stories of people who lived for Jesus, suffered for Jesus, and in some cases even died for Jesus. Christian heroes from many different times and places and sects are covered here, everyone from Stephen (the first recorded martyr for the Faith), through Martin Luther King Jr. and Mother Teresa, including such lesser known lights as the 26 martyrs of 16th century Japan, the Moravian Indians of Ohio, and Johann and Susanna Kroeker.

Overall, I found this to be a fascinating and informative book, and a very uplifting one as well. If you want to read about Heroes of the Church – believers from all times and places, then this is the book for you. I give it my highest recommendations!
martyrdom revealed at large Aug. 6 2013

It was great to finally read this book and learn about so many people who sacrificed their lives for the sake of Christ. Many of the people I had or hadn't known about before, but I loved that there were newer, more modern stories in this including my uncle, Timothy Van Dyke (which is ultimately why I purchased it). If you "love" martyr or missionary stories, definitely pick this book up.

My mistake was in hoping this book would be appropriate for younger readers. It's not.
This book will be interesting to adults who enjoy delving into a wider world of our holier members of humanity, be they
Protestant or Catholic. Unfortunately, this didn't quite fit the bill for an 8-year-old granddaughter who lives in the worlds of
both Lutheranism and Catholicism.
