This review is from: The Complete Book Of Hold 'Em Poker (Paperback)
Although it is not a horrible book, and certainly targets the low to lower-mid level player, this book is far from being comprehensive. In fact, it is really a book on cash games in the low to lower middle limit range. The few paragraphs he does devote to no-limit and pot-limit are so pathetic that he might as well have written the truth and said: I really have no clue how to play no-limit or pot-limit but I added this useless page and a half just so my publisher could say it is "comprehensive" As mentioned in earlier reviews, he is neither a impressively successful limit player, nor is he a particularly noteworthy theorist. However, he has made this book a compilation of theories of the game. It is pretty much unique in its treatment of meta-theory of poker, specifically he does try to explain various theories of poker, and how they influence how other writers approach the game. He also spends more time than most authors on the consideration of important non-technical factors such as seat and table selection, bank roll requirements etc. Frankly, he could have got rid a lot of chapters which were useless, or worse, and tried to deal with hand reading, mixing of playing styles, and more advanced maneuvers for heads up play. In general, it is a different approach that will add some value to your game, but you can safely ignore his hand chart, and chapters on tournaments and no-limit.

This review is from: The Complete Book Of Hold 'Em Poker (Paperback)
This was a very Enjoyable Book. It provided important and useful concepts about the game of Poker. I learned new concepts, which identified some leaks in my game. Leaks in your game can come from anywhere!!! Leaks can originate from lack of aggression, overcalling raises, misreading opponents and any other number of ways. So this book helps. Many people look at poker the wrong way. They think to win they need to do all of this super fancy plays and mindblowing stunts. Well folks...there are not that many options in poker...you fold, call or raise. So its really hard to do thinks that will just fool your opponents all the time. To win at poker it is mostly limiting your mistakes and getting all that you can from winning hands and minimizing losses on losing hands...that's it Ive been playing for about 5 years now and love the game. Ive read many poker books and found this one to be very good. So I would suggest you buy this book and maybe a couple others and get to playing. GOOD BOOK, Jun 13 2004
This review is from: The Complete Book Of Hold 'Em Poker (Paperback)
This is a decent book for playing texas hold'em but phil helmuth's book is more suited for the beginner. I would recommend either helmuth's book or lee jones if your main goal is to start learning practical poker instead of something leaning more theoretical. Just an opinion. If you are a new poker player and would like to start playing poker online at www.partypoker.com - make sure you use the bonus code: "AMAZONPOKER" and you will receive $25 free on your first purchase at www.PartyPoker.com.
