5.0 out of 5 stars So... Jan. 3 2012
By wogan - Published on
This is the book that would be my first choice to give to anyone just starting to sew. The directions are clear and concise and the illustrations, even though they are black and white line drawings and some black and white photos, let you know what to do. Through the book there are explanations of sewing terms, little bits of helpful information, cautions and other interesting facts. I have been sewing for many, many! years and still learned some things in this book, like how to use a bobbin winder to make cord. There also some easy craft projects and some other items to make in here. The directions about frogging are better than the ones I have in any other sewing book

Included are hand stitching, machine sewing, needles and thread, fabric, seams, fun finishes, curves, pleats, tucks, darts, gathers, applique, textiles and trims, measuring garments, patterns, pinning, cutting, collars, sleeves, waistbands, pockets, hemlines, a glossary, resources and an index.
I was really surprised at how complete and well done this book is.

5.0 out of 5 stars It really is a great beginner book! June 3 2012
By Jamie Bourgeois - Published on
Being brand new to sewing, other than the few requisite projects in 7th grade home ec class over 20 years ago, I needed a visual guide that would be easy to read and understand. I was very happy that this Idiot guide is exactly what I needed. I used this guide and my machine's manual to learn the basics of sewing. And now that I am moving beyond the basics, this guide is still my go to book. I've had a few issues that have come up with my machine, and this guide helped me more than the machine's manual!

I say this is a must have for the beginner sewer, or someone with minimal experience.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not that great Aug. 10 2012

I am not a beginner but I do not know everything and I was looking for some tips and tricks. I would recommend this for an absolute beginner. There is nothing here for anyone with any knowledge of sewing.
4.0 out of 5 stars Builds on techniques July 6 2013

The instructions were mostly clear. I say mostly because a brand new sewer like me can be easily confused. I like that it has diagrams and that the projects included build a set of techniques needed for sewing.
