Allysa Torey and Jennifer Appel are the founders of the Magnolia Bakery in New York City. In 1999 Jennifer Appel left to open Buttercup Bake Shop, which has two locations in Manhattan, where she resides with her husband and daughter. Allysa Torey lives with her son Wilson Henry in upstate New York, where she spends her time writing, cooking, gardening, and taking long walks through the hayfields with her collies Sam, Daisy, and Honey.

I've only tried one recipe in this book so far (Magnolia's Chocolate Cupcakes with Buttercream Frostine) and I have to say, my opinion is divided. I didn't particularly love them, I found them dry and I felt the icing was too sweet. So I brought them all to the office so that I wouldn't have to eat them. They were all eaten and fans of very sweet, very chocolatey deserts loved them. Not as good as the original Magnolia's cupcakes, and I'm no baking novice!

Format: Paperback
We recently purchased this cookbook, and have tried seven or eight recipes so far, with stellar results - and I do mean stellar. Lemon vanilla bundt cake, pumpkin squares, pecan shortbread, a couple of the cookies, the caramel brownies are OUTSTANDING. If you love sweet stuff in a big way, I would highly recommend this book.

My motto is to "Practise Random Acts of Baking" and I am always on the lookout for good baking cookbooks. The first recipe I made from this book -- "Chocolate Brownies with Caramel, Peanut Butter and Pecans" was amazing! There is also a really good selection of cheesecakes and muffins, breakfast buns and quick breads. I know I will also use their fillings, frostings and sauces frequently. The recipes are well-written and easy to follow. The only suggestion would be to add photos to every recipe, but the ones that are there are mouth-watering. A great addition to your cookbook collection!
