Review

"A memoir of growing up as a girl in revolutionary Iran, Persepolis provides a unique glimpse into a nearly unknown and unreachable way of life... That Satrapi chose to tell her remarkable story as a gorgeous comic book makes it totally unique and indispensable."
--Time

Product Description

Here, in one volume: Marjane Satrapi's best-selling, internationally acclaimed memoir-in-comic-strips.

Persepolis is the story of Satrapi's unforgettable childhood and coming of age within a large and loving family in Tehran during the Islamic Revolution; of the contradictions between private life and public life in a country plagued by political upheaval; of her high school years in Vienna facing the trials of adolescence far from her family; of her homecoming--both sweet and terrible; and, finally, of her self-imposed exile from her beloved homeland. It is the chronicle of a girlhood and adolescence at once outrageous and familiar, a young life entwined with the history of her country yet filled with the universal trials and joys of growing up.

Edgy, searingly observant, and candid, often heartbreaking but threaded throughout with raw humor and hard-earned wisdom--Persepolis is a stunning work from one of the most highly regarded, singularly talented graphic artists at work today.

4.0 out of 5 stars A coming-of-age narrative, April 26 2011
This review is from: The Complete Persepolis: Now a Major Motion Picture (Paperback)
Frankly I initially bought this book for an English class. I have never heard of the film nor Marjane Satrapi. This is one of the most interesting autobiographies I have read because it is in a graphic novel format. And as a coming-of-age narrative, Marjane delivers. With her child-like drawings and black-and-white colours the reader gets a glimpse of the Iranian revolution seen through a growing child's perspective. This graphic novel is her story, and Iran and Austria are her backgrounds as she matures.

This is not the best graphic novel out there, but having it in this form makes it unique and unforgettable. I wouldn't recommend this to everybody; but this is certainly an interesting read.

A modern insight to war and 'revolution'... one of my favourite reads of 2010. I also highly recommend the film!

The Portrayal of the murderous Shah's regime, and backwards Islamic Republic's regime was very accurate.

This book shows no bias. Very entertaining.
