From the Artist

The most erudite singer-songwriter after Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen parlayed unsurpassed lyrical skills and a distinctive disposition into a brilliant, if fitful, career. Born in Montreal in 1934, Cohen published poetry and prose before striking out as a composer and performer; in fact, he was in his mid-30s before he made his recording debut. That debut, simply titled Songs of Leonard Cohen (1968), was the most acclaimed of his career, although Songs of Love and Hate (1971) and I'm Your Man (1988) were also hugely praised. Everyone from Johnny Cash to R.E.M. covered Cohen, and he developed a cult following that spanned generations and genres.

I have quite a few of the Cohen albums already, on LP and CD, but the opportunity to acquire the full set at a reasonable price was too attractive. This covers all the studio albums Cohen has produced, and some of them seem to have been remastered as they sound a little better on these recordings than the original LP or CD.

It's an interesting exercise to go through the albums chronologically, listening to the way Cohen has refined and developed as an artist over the years. There's some really great songs in this collection, and a lot that never seemed to get the popularity they maybe deserved. Certainly Cohen is not going to be everyone's cup of tea, any more than any artist is, but for a solid retrospective of a great artist, this is a lovely collection.

As a box, you'll save quite a bit over acquiring these discs separately, so it's a good bargain in the process of building a Cohen collection.

While I had some of the individual Discs of Leonard Cohen I bought this complete box set to get everything else in a single sweep and I made the right choice in doing so. This is a great set and my wife hardly lets it out of her sight, she calls it fantastic and parks the set by the stereo for easy playing all the time. To Gain all of his Studio work in one purchase the cost is quite reasonable and you get it all, lock stock and barrel. If I have one criticism it is that the print on the individual sleeves is kind of small so if you wish to read the sleeves have a magnifying lens handy. All the original art work is on the sleeves of each studio disc, all details of this box set have been seen to. If you are a Leonard Cohen fan and want to have it all buy this box set and be done with the stress of having to keep looking for the disc that keeps getting away ( there is always one )...Spigomars

No mistaking the poetic, evocative lyrics and dulcet tones of L.C. It's the distinct, melodic, slightly off tone voice of the past versus the deeper, refined and expressive vocals of today, The transformation and transportation are electric. May he live forever, or at the very least be remembered as one of Canada's greatest gifts to the rest of the world.
