Absolutely fascinating historical literature, especially for Bible students, Aug 14 2011

This review is from: The Complete Works of Josephus (Paperback)
Josephus is considered by countless scholars and intellectual Bible readers to be one of the definitive historical sources that validates and confirms the Bible's accounts. As one who loves to study both history and the scriptures, I found this book to be absolutely fascinating and thoroughly enjoyable. It's very readable in smaller doses, and full of details and great commentary. Anyone who loves the Bible, history, different cultures, and classic literary works should definitely give this volume serious consideration. Buy it, learn from it, and appreciate its value.

Okay, I admit to only reading good bits, Nov 3 2007

Fascinating image of life and historical events in the first century CE. Surprisingly readable, at least in small batches, despite the density of text and difficulty keeping track of the players.

Ancient but not up-to-date, April 5 2012

Josephus is great - I don't disagree with the other reviewers on that score. His first-hand account of an important historical era is fascinating and informative. My problem, and my reason for 3 instead of 5 stars, is the translation. Whiston's translation has been the standard one for almost 3 centuries, and this is its drawback. The archaic English is almost as much work to translate as the original Latin (assuming, of course, that you can read Latin). While I can still follow the text, it becomes work rather than an enjoyable read.
I think it's high time for somebody to do a new translation into contemporary English
