While teaching UC Berkeley's courses in "The Professional Sequence in Editing," I regularly assigned selected exercises in this book's earlier editions as preparation for more complex exercises in class. The students' evaluations of the book were always favorable.
This edition presents a fast-track introduction to the many changes in the Chicago Manual of Style, sixteenth edition, 2010. I particularly appreciate the handbook's references to the Merriam-Webster's Dictionary of English Usage. (See my review of this great usage dictionary on amazon.) Ever since its publication in 1989, I have regularly enjoyed reading MWDEU's scholarly entries. These 2300 entries, often witty, drawn mainly from literary sources are a refreshing contrast to Garner's stridently prescriptive injunctions in the Chicago Manual that have been drawn mainly from journalistic sources.
The inclusion of complete keys to the handbook's exercises make it an excellent workbook for self-teaching or reviewing the basics of professional copyediting.

Masterful teaching, which could even lead to world peace, Oct 27 2011

I read Einsohn once or twice a year. She covers so much, so well, that it's always a helpful refresher. In discussing editorial issues she goes beyond issuing decrees. She compares approaches from different style guides, and quotes contending arguments for a larger problem-solving view. In fact, I have to suspect that her intelligent middle path between dogmatic legalism and unprincipled permissiveness is indeed the key to world peace.

The Copyeditor's Handbook was very helpful to me in determining just what is expected of a copyeditor, especially in the book publishing industry. The typeface and book layout make it easy to read. Numerous examples of sentence revisions are helpful in grasping the "rules." I look forward to working on the exercises in the back of the book. I'm sure I'll have the book frequently on hand as I work my way toward total confidence as a copyeditor!
